Imagine that you're a singer and are putting a band together. Who would be your first choice for the bass chair?
Personally, my first pick would be Marcus Miller. He has a great groove and is incredibly tasteful in a backing band situation. |

Bass: Stanley Clarke
Drums: Jerry Gaskill
Guitar: Tuck Andress
Keys: Rick Wakeman
Of course, I would be totally outclassed and they would fire me about halfway through our first rehearsal. |

He doesn't over- or underplay, but he lays down the foundation. He's also capable of going into a bit of a solo (before my false singing deafens everyone, of course.) |

| | <-- That guy looks like me, but old. | | Join Date: Aug 2002 Location: Arlington TX | | | The obvious answer is me, because that's what I did in my old band.
But if you mean 'Which studio cat or other bass figure would I want to play my parts?' I'd have to pick Roscoe Beck. I heard an album he did with Leonard Cohen and it sounded like my stuff. When he did that recording I was still playing busier lines and being obvious that I was a Geddy-worshipper, but now that I have calmed a bit with time, the parts I write off the cuff sound a lot like what Roscoe did with Leonard.
