I'll Show Them! Gig Revenge

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a gig coming up. And it's like right in a hot spot area of talent here in Michigan. Over the last couple years, I've been looking for a new band. I had auditions, I've had people blow me off, I've had both. I've had the same guy snag two spots in two different bands I was trying out for. A lot of that happend right in this area where the gig is.
I've finally got something going, it's a dark progressive rock band, kind of like Pink Floyd meets Rush. I met the primary songwriter/singer/guitarist through Craigslist. The band has had some critical sucess, but has gone through a few member changes, except for the leader, who's the only original member. We have a really strong line up now. I'm really excited to be playing with these players. Quite possibly the best players I've worked with. And definitly the most complete band I've been in. Everyone is at the top of their game.
We have a gig coming up on July 23. Who has that feeling like, "I hope everyone who ever blew me off is here, now check out this tasty lick!"? I know it's completly stupid, and probably none of those people will be there. I know that probably the best revenge is just being satisfied with where I'm at. But at the same time, I can't wait to blow the roof off of that place, and leave the haters in the dust!

It'll feel good, while your on stage, but the people you are looking to impress, or leave in the dust won't care, and will always find a way to criticize you...

That is if they even really know you exist. It sounds like you have created this "ongoing battle" in your own head... He might be there, but not know why you are acting the fool...

Just food for thought.

Yeah, I'm just going to have fun. It is all in my head, these cats don't give a rats *** about me. I still want to pack the place with as many people as we can get.

Better hope that the guy who snagged those two other auditions out from under you is busy that night...

Who cares about that guy? We're putting together a killer set. I think it's going to be sweet!

you really set yourself up for disappointment when you use negativity as motivation....focus on what you are doing for it's own sake.....

I'd focus more on the gig itself rather than worrying about showing off to people you potentially could have played with in the past.

I know you guys are right. And I will totally focus. But has anyone else ever felt like that? I feel like Jack Black in School Of Rock or something.

Your motivations are weaksauce.
You should be playing for the love of it.

What is your bands name and what venue? I live in Ferndale.

Don't worry I didn't steal any of your gigs.

I don't see anything wrong with revenge. Certainly not as the *only* motivation, that's sort of an empty life, but hey it feels good while it lasts.

When you're on stage--what better goal than to "show 'em how great you are"? Sheesh. "playing for the love of it"...sounds like I'm in a room full of bass players and rhythm guitarists.

I say good on you, and go for it!

It's a very understandable way to feel, but remember that every time you spend time and energy thinking about "them" you're wasting energy that could be going into other things and letting their actions steal a little more of your life.

No biggy, it can work as a motivator, but keep it on a tight leash if you do.

Unless they're paying you or you're married to them, it's healthier not to concern yourself about what other people think of you.

Not necessarily the same thing, but I know my band's played much better when we've had questionable bands opening for us. Made it clear that we had tons of opportunity to blow doors off.

Do it because you dig it. Dig it because you do it. People will think what they think, but as long as you dig what you do and do what you dig, what they think won't impact you in the slightest.

Other people will love, hate, be perplexed, intrigued, fascinated, disgusted, want to be just like you, want to be nothing like you, find your playing to be stellar, find your playing to be silly - and if you allow your sense of yourself and your enjoyment of what you do to be impacted by any of that, you will always lose.

Do it, do it well, make yourself happy and **** the world and what they think.
