I'm doing a speech on how the bass has affected Reggae music

The bass had a big role in Reggae and that genre of music has influenced many other styles (rap, disco). Perhaps somebody can give me some information?

Maybe a family man quote about Reggae bass/music?

Thanks

"Rock Steady, Mon".

"OK", maybe not a Family Man quotation, per se.

Have you searched over at www.allmusic.com
IIRC, they have 'brief' histories of many genres over there...maybe their synopsis will, in turn, give you other ideas to look into.

As far as Reggae influencing Disco-
...the sheer repetition of what the rhythm section does is along the same thinking. Both are geared for dance...too much deviation/improv confoozes the dancers; ya wanna keep the dance floor packed.

Reggae influencing Rap-
There was something called "versioning"...essentially, 'rapping' new lyrics over an existing track; the track was usually a 'hit' & was known by the dancers(I assume). So, the rhythm section is, again, the constant; the words are new & different.

Happy hunting.

Here's a great article from an old Bass Player issue.

Click on artists, then scroll down to 'Dub Reggae' from November '96.
