Im in kind of a dilema right now. Heres the situation:
My parents are moving to Minnesota, and i dont know if i want to go with them, or stay here with my band.
If i go to minnesota, i'd be movign to a even smaller town than the one I am in right now, but I'd be able to go to a college out there that has a good music program, I could learn how to work in a recording studio and such. But i would not know anyone, id leave all of my friends behind, and theres this girl who ive been talking with, and if i leave, then that will be over before it even starts.
If i stay, i'd be able to stay with my band, who i feel is pretty good, and yes i know the chances of actually making it are slim to none, i just feel this is a good band and might have a chance. the other two in the band have a year left of school. ive found apartment i'd be able to rent, though it will be hard and i will have very little extra money.
Im just not sure what to do, for any advice or suggestions, I thank ya
~Mike

| | | | I'd say: leave with your parents. You'll learn a trade, meet new people and some new girl, be sure of it.

I moved our family from NE to WA about a year and a half ago, and it's a big adjustment. Having said that, move to MN with your parents. You can hook up with another band there, get a good music education at the college, and meet new friends.

You have a chance to get an education, sounds like in a field you are interestd in. Why take on the debt of living by yourself at your age. I guarantee, you will make alot more money over your lifetime with an education. Go with the folks for now. You'll have plenty of time to make your own decisions in life. |

What if your potential new girl friend doesn't work out? Sounds to me like staying with your folks, going to the institution of higher learning that has a course of study you can get your teeth into, might be the best answer in the long term. There's an old saying, "Family first," and it's still around because it's so true in so many cases.
And if worse comes to worse, you can always move back to your current location if the new situation doesn't work out - but give it at least a year before you make that decision. I grew up a military brat, moved quite a few times, and usually it takes at least that long to really start fitting into a new area and make some real friends, contacts, and so on.

| | | | Go with your family and get that good education! Bands and girls will come and go... not always true, but it usually is. But the older you get the harder it becomes to get a good education, especially in something you really are interested in like music.
My locally successful band (years ago) never really got a chance to go on any sort of mini tour. Several of us had things(jobs) holding us back. But I had one of the big ones, I was in college studying philosophy. Looking back I do wish I had gone on some little tours with the old band....However, I certainly do not regret getting a proper education, and I never will. |

Rock, Jazz, country, metal, indie rock, pop, DJ's etc...Whatever you want. the MLSP scene is one of the top in the country! behind NY, LA, Nashville, Austin and Chicago.
There are plenty of opportunities and great Schools. U of MN, McNally Smith is great, Also good schools for engineering etc.. IPR is one of them. Lots of great recording studios too. Also, many, many world class musician and TONS of really really really good one to take lessons from.
Great Venues, for both cover bands and original music.
If you are man enough to handle the winters, Minnesota is great! PM me when you get here and I can help plug you into the scence and give you some resources.
PS- The MN women really know how to keep you warm on those cold nights!

The odds against any band you are in now having the sort of success that would make it worth splitting from your folks while they are still willing to send you to college are huge. The odds of that girl you just barely know being your one and only soulmate are vanishingly small. The older you get, the harder it is to uproot yourself and move.
Go to Minnesota and don't look back. |

| | | | I'd have to side with your fellow TBer's, make the move. I took my BA, then delayed going back for my education to become a teacher to play music for a while (hey I was in school for like 12 years right?). Four years later and I'm just gearing up to go back in spring (thanks for kicking me out of the band guys). Its gets harder the more time passes. Get it done. |

If you are able to deal with small-town living just until you are able to leave for college, and then go to college in one of those two cities, you will never regret it. Great music scene, great colleges, plenty of good living. |

But yeah, he's right. Stick with the folks, and get that college degree. Don't screw your future self by blowing that off.
