Keyboard-playing has always been a thing for me, something I've always wanted to do. I finally got my keyboard today!

Now to learn to play it...........

If you are serious about having a few keyboard chops, i'd point to Hanon's Virtuoso Pianist as a widely cited (and leaned upon) standard for developing fingering skills and such. Pianists are as emphatic about this volume as they can be, from what I read years ago.

I haven't done these exercises for several years, but I started up with keyboards again a few months ago, and just started the exercises again yesterday (a few). What struck me was that I just remembered how to do runs and fingerings without even thinking about it, as I was transposing a few songs. I thought, "How the heck do I know this?" and then I remembered - Hanon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vir...n_60_Exercises

Bassist keyboard players around here insist that fingering exercises on keys will not hurt fingering habits on fretboard. I believe them, but I can't prove it yet. Welcome to an exciting world!

I bought my missus a keyboard for Xmas after she said she would like to learn again. It's got learning modules and will walk you through pre-programmed songs etc.

She hasn't touched it since getting it but the kids like bashing away on it.

Last week, for no apparant reason I started learning the start to Beethovens' Fur Elise on it.

I should probably learn scales and fingerings first.

Good luck with the keyboard learning.

Very cool, congrats!

What did you get?

I have always played keyboads on my own, not in a band. I took three years of classical piano lessons during my Jr. high school years.

I truly believe that the piano/keyboard is a very usful thing for any musician to be framiliar with. I think that it is just a more intuitive instrument and makes learning music easier.

Cheers!

yea i just started aswell, there are basic free tutorials on the net to get ya playing scales and familiarized with the notes. I find learning songs is a great way to get familiar with the keyboard though. try mad world it is extremely simple but fantastic and it helps you with getting used to the keyboard.

I just moved into a house, and the previous renters left a piano in there. When we moved in, all the keys stuck, some didn't work at all, the sustain pedal didn't work, etc. Well, during a serious A.D.D. episode, a friend and I opened it all up, and started figuring out how it worked. I mean, nothing to lose, right? Within an hour, we had the whole piano up and working, save one key, which has a broken linkage. Now it just needs tuned. So I've been playing a little, which has been a blast.

Any recommendations for a decent beginners book, or some other method to learn?

Hi

There are plenty of books to choose from....but it will be a case of finding a shop that sells piano books and going through some different ones with the assistants. They should be able to recommend one for your needs.
For the keyboards I use the 'Absolute Beginners' series. These come as a box containing a instruction book, CD of backing tracks, plus accesories. The one for keys comes with a book of easy classic keyboard pieces and a headphone and adaptor.

OK clever. The reason I'm learning keyboards is for worship band- if I can play both then I willbe able to perform a lot more worship music than just bass stuff. Plus, I'll get more playing time!

As for the RSI thing- I'll have to live with it. Occupational hazard of keyboardists/bassists.

Yeah. I tried learning the right-hand (keys) intro on bass too.

Much easier on keyboard, I was actually quite surprised how quick I absorbed the "riff".

It's only when having to bring the left hand in and move the right up the keyboard I got stuck, and decided I should learn some scales and where the notes are first
