I'm playing a big show tonight and I've never heard the material.

I just found out Wednesday that I will be playing a big show at legendary venue Tipitina's tonight with various artists. I'm pretty much going to be the defacto house bassist with three different bands/artists: Deltafunk, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, and some other guy named Goat something-or-other that is apparently a pretty big deal. They're going to pack several hundred people into this place tonight (it's a free show), but nobody has bothered to provide me with any musical information about the gig.

I'm going to be learning the material onstage. I'm not really worried about it, but I'm a little miffed that the musical director didn't have this planned a little better. They waited until the last minute to decide on a bassist, and then didn't bother following through with me about what was expected of me at all. They finally got a CD of *some* of the material yesterday evening, but the CD was a bad burn and wouldn't play. Hmph.

So if any of you New Orleans area peeps want to come and see me fall flat on my face in front of a few hundred people, come on out to Tip's tonight at 10pm. It's a free show, and should be a lot of fun.

I can sorta relate. Few weeks ago at what was basically a debut gig for my current band I blew my E string on the opening tune and for the rest of the set was having to transpose all songs on the fly and octave up...

I felt like a tool, but I got a lot of positive comments for "pulling it off." Good learning situation.

Good Luck, and don't take it too seriously, obviously the music director isn't.
