Does anyone like any of this type of music? Im 15 and I really like this music. alot of classic rock bands have alot of indian influences in it. IVe also thought many times of buying a sitar off of ebay. What zeppelin albums really show the indian influences?

Oh yeah. I definitely dig it. Some of the chill/ambient/techno material to which I listen incorporates Indian & Arabic modal music...

Here's a place to start to comparison shop for anyone interested in world/ethnic instruments. www.kylemusic.com

And yes, I have bought from them with no problems.

You're quite welcome.

Queens County, New York: the most ethnically diverse borough in the U.S.!

Peter Gabriel did the music to The Last Temptation of Christ. The soundtrack is fantastic in it's own right, but he also released "Passion Sources" which is mostly acoustic instruments that inspired the keyboard heavy sound track. This is a wicked intro to Arabic music as heard through the westerner's ear.

Anyone interested in Classic rock and middle eastern music should watch Concert for Bangladesh. It is incredible, and makes me want to buy a sitar.

And I've never heard any indian influence in Zeppelin...

I have to agree 100%

While I don't own the soundtrack, I have the movie on DVD, and the sountrack is very Middle-eastern-sounding and very haunting.

Another CD that many of you who like Indian/Arabic music will probably like is this: http://www.wbr.com/mckennitt/bookofs...p/secrets.html

It has more of a Turkish/Central Asian sound, but the Indian/Arabic influence can still be heard as well as a Celtic influence.

Read the list of instruments played.

I just thought of another, more current example.

Has anyone heard the song, "Missing," from Beck's album, "Guero?

The song has a Brazilian feel to it, but the string arrangement sounds Indian.

Very unusual, yet pleasant to the ears.

All those who say they've never heard Zeppelin with any Indian/Arabic influence , havent you ever heard "Kashmir". Ver Arabic sounding. Plant and PAge always took vacations to India and Moracco to jam with local musicians for inspiration. Dancing Days and White Summer were also influeced by Indian music

Also has any found anywhere , where they have sitars for around 300? I think im going to buy a 1/2 or 3/4 size sitar , jsut to haev fun with. I think i saw some on ebay for that price

It's über-hip, my friend. My new favorite genre...

Check out "Groove Salad" at SomaFM (http://www.somafm.com) - accessible at Shoutcast Radio on WinAmp, or playable via the media player of your choice. It's an eclectic mix of chill ambient/electronic grooves, but a lot of it has a definite Near Eastern & South Asian vibe.

I can't wait to start developing this type of stuff with a band. It's so structurally open, textural and downright groovalicious, it's just gotta lend itself to all kinds of productive improvisation - which should lead to some excellent group composed/arranged original material...

It's not a big one. Kashmir has tidbits of Arabic Orchestral stuff played on Mellotron by JPJ. White Summer has Jimmy Page tuning his guitar like a sitar and throwing in a few arabic style arppegios and scale runs. Dancing Days' main riff has a kinda Indian curb to it.
