Indiana shops?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am looking for a good shop that is close to home here in indianapolis. I searched google but of course All I found was a certain fish.

I also have a house by Grand Rapids, MI, so a day trip to Low Down Sound might be in order. I didn't have time to go to Bass Club Chicago last time I was there either...

Any good shops close to me?

Edit: I mean like to look at basses, not to do repairs, setup, and such. Just to clarify.

Thumbs up Guitarworks

If your on the southside then check out Guitarworks in Greenwood. If you can, deal with Kevin Franklin as he is a great guy.

BTW, have them put you on their e-mail list for upcoming events at they store as the have some pretty cool people come by sometimes.

It's not quite as big as a GC but it is definately the largest privately owned shop I have ever been to.

What are you looking for specifically? I find that GC and Sam Ash can have some surprises. I used to like going to about music but the owner is always really rude and hes kinda stopped buying new electric basses. I was also in the brand new vibes music, which is a CD store, that took over the old fun house music. They had a vintage acoustic 360 rig and a bunch of wierd esoteric stuff.

fun house used to have all kinds of old stuff in there, but i don't know what john has done with it since he bought it and made it the second vibes. the GC in castleton, surprisingly enough, does have a pretty good selection of basses. i've seen a couple of pedullas and beneventes there. if you're down for a little bit of a drive, the music shoppe out here in terre haute has a TON of stuff. it's real small and cramped but if you catch the owner on a good day you can get him talking about his personal warehouse of vintage gear he has.

There's a great little shop in the heart of Broadripple called About Music. It's been a few years since I've been in there, but he had a decent selection of basses, and usually had a few things you don't see everyday. He's usually got a few uprights around as well.

Yeah, I regularly go to GC and Sam Ash here, but I'm looking for something more like that acoustic guitar shop in Broad ripple (for basses, of course). They do have some nice basses there, just not the volume or diversity that you would get from someplace like the Chicago music exchange (just went there about a month ago - AMAZING selection of vintage fenders), Low down sound, and the like.

I do go to that acoustic guitar shop btw, it is close (I live where kessler meets Spring Mill)

It's been several years since i've been down to Indy, but Guitar Works is awesome from what i remember. I was close to pulling the trigger on a Dean 6 they had back in 2002. Couldn't get the rest of the funds together-so i had to pass.

Is IRC Music/Audio still in business? They had a decent selection of Fenders if i remember correctly. My fav. shop down there closed up a few years back [Guitars & More on County Line-where i got my ray5 at].

Another one that i don't know if they're still around is Arthur's Music. The last time i was there was in 1999 or 2000. I don't remember the address. They had DeArmond basses when i was there [where i first saw the Ashbory-ended up picking one up from IRC].

I have to plug Scott Pazera's shop in Lafayette. His hours are by appointment only, but it's well worth the time if he has what you are interested in. I studied with Scott a few years back and i consider him a mentor. He carries nice gear.

Yeah, I bought my first bass there and the guys there always treated me good. Sad indeed.

I went in IRC the other day after not going in there for years. I was way more impressed with their prices than the last time i went in there. The last time I went they were literally charging list on everything. You cant do that when you have both a sam ash and guitar center within a quarter mile. Their prices were much more realistic this time.

Stopped in at Guitarworks today on the way home. Had about 50-60 basses in the showroom. Washburn, Epiphone, Gibson among others. A few higher end pieces...I'm not familiar enough with them to id them without a name on the headstock.

Met Kevin Franklin...very friendly and seems like he'd be easy to work with.

I have no connection to the place...just like poking around looking at bass gear.

I will definitely check out guitarworks and maybe Scott Pazera's shop, from all of the things I have heard.

Radub, how about in the Grand Rapids area? I drive through there every time I go to/from my cottage in pentwater, so it would be easy to look there.

Kevin can definitely fix you up right. I took lessons from Gary Checkeye for a couple years and got to know most of the guys there. Their prices aren't bad either, and they're always willing to work with you.

Edit: IRC is pretty decent, though they have a small selection. The GC in Greenwood isn't bad, but like always, the prices are hit and miss.
