I feel that the type of rap that is popular isn't a great example of what I think rap is about. IMO a great vocabulary and great rhyming, on top of a good "topic" (rather than stupid ****) is what rap is about.
For all of you that think it is all stupid **** I want yall to listen to both of these songs and really listen to lyrics and what they mean.
The first is Not Afraid by Eminem. This song gives me chills. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5-yKhDd64s&ob=av3e
The second is Mr. Hit That Hoe by Treal Lee. By far one of the stupidest songs I've ever heard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guUbmCjdPFo
This is all IMHO, but I think it needs to be said.

| | | | You're better off not trying to convince anyone of anything. The narrow-minded people who think that rap is only about sex, drugs, violence and ignorance won't be swayed. Don't waste your time trying to prove anything to them; just enjoy the music. There are enough people who already get it. I appreciate the effort, though.

It's not hip hop, its factory-made get-drunk-in-a-sketchy-club music. But most people have already made up their minds on if they like hip hop or not based on a big glaring examples or music centered on less than healthy themes.
I think Illogic says it best in his song "Favorite things":
"My favorite things include...
Seeing humbleness replace overconfidence,
Hearin MC's that rap about the consequence,
instead of glorifyin a lifestyle that lacks any type of common sense" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNGwvwt1fVY |

I'm not a fan of every single eminem song (Number One would be one that I rather dislike), but as a whole I think puts out more 'intelligent' rap than someone like Lil Wayne or DJ Khaled. |

| | | | Eminem was on "60 Minutes" a few weeks ago. In the story they had a few short clips of some of his songs and I must say for being the old guy that I am I rather liked them. I thought the music was pretty interesting.
On the other hand I've heard some rap that was the most depressing stuff I've ever heard. Can't remember the artist but wow, this stuff was about as dry as you could get. No life what so ever to it.
All in all I really don't know rap music very well but there is some good stuff out there, IMHO. |

Anyway, for your consideration: Aesop Rock - 9-5ers Anthem Deltron - Things You Can Do
But, really, I think the content thing is bogus. |

Have you seen/heard the 'country' charts?
Hip Hop/Rap is no different. |

Intelligent rap, IMO, is stuff like JayZ, where its not all about "slappin the hoes, makin billz, and hittin the pot".
IMO.
