International Sol Bass Competition

Sign in to disble this ad
I just saw in the paper this morning that the second International Solo Bass Competition will be held Oct 14, 2006 at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC. The University's Website lists this as a "Workshop Weekend," but only gives details about the concert that night. Featured bassists are Victor Wooten, Billy Sheehan, John Pattitucci and Steve Bailey. This sounds like a great event, but does anybody know about the workshop portion of this weekend?

Due to the extreme undertaking last year, this years event will be an in-between year for the SBC. Not really a competition in the same way as last year.....this year will feature an introduction/panel discussion, followed by a private concert on Friday. Saturday will be all day workshop/masterclasses with Victor, Steve, Billy, Patitucci, and Gregg Bissonette. At the end of the day some of the students will be chosen to audition, which could earn you the chance to play in that nights concert with all the instructors.

Cost is $200 to gaurantee your spot, no audition required. For the tuition fee you'll get the Friday panel discussion and private concert, the Saturday workshops with the guest artists, as well as a ticket to the public concert on Saturday night.....come and learn, come and hang with the guys....it should be VERY cool.

Hope to see you there!

This sounds like an awesome weekend, but I have only been playing for three months, and have only played songs in church about five times. Would I be in way over my head at this workshop, or could a beginner like me go and not be embarrassed?

I'd guess that since there is no audition required for this years' event, that there will be all levels of players. It is NOT a competition this year in the way it was last year. If you think you understand the basic concepts, I have a feeling anyone would get A LOT out of the weekend. Maybe you won't be able to execute everything you see or learn there, but the seeds will be planted, and I gaurantee it will be an inspirational event. Usually these masterclass/workshops give you a ton of information to digest after the weekend is complete....on your own time. Not to forget the collective knowledge from being surrounded by a bunch of other bass players!

BTW.....although I'm on the Staff for Bass At The Beach, and help out with the upcoming, "The Bass Vault"........I am not directly involved in the Solo Bass Competition organization.

However, I do have intimate knowledge of the event as a friend of Steve's, and can get most questions answered, etc. Feel free to email or PM me if you have any questions, comments....

It does sound like an awespme weekend- and the best way to improve is to play with people who are better than you. They don't come much better than this...
