International travel with bass

I'm going to a latin jazz workshop in Brazil (Rio) in March. I bought an ATA-approved hard case for my bass, so I think it will survive the flight. However, I'm concerned that it might "disappear" from my hotel room while I'm out sightseeing. Maybe I should buy a Squier or SX or something for the trip, then sell it when I get home? Or am I just being paranoid? Is there travel insurance that would cover a musical instrument?

Appreciate any thoughts, especially if you have experience with international travel with your bass.
