Internet the best way for looking for a new band member??

Sign in to disble this ad
In the era of information do you think it is necessary to go out and send leaflets or publish in the newspaper for a new band member???
Or do you prefer posting at forums, facebook of other bands, other bands web pages, etc.

I'd say canvass in any way you can. Craigslist has mostly flakes, but there are a few gems every now and then. Clist is how I found a couple of really cool bands I used to be in.

Go to local music stores. Post an ad in the classifieds. Try Facebook, Myspace and Craigslist.

The guitarist in the band I'm in found us all (another guitarist, me on bass, drummer, and singer) all on Craigslist. All of us are fairly new (everyone under 5 years of playing) though so that may not say much depending on what you're looking for...

You would think with all the technology in our hands, text, cell, internet, craigslist, etc. that it would be much easier to meet musicians, weed out the undesirables and find like minded and like-skilled players, but it's really not.

I sometimes miss the old days where you had to meet up and play! I swear I meet more hacks the new way.

I've had horrible luck on CL, but I live in a crappy area where CL isn't popular. Niether is music When I lived up where Waterpilot lives, CL was the place to go. Depends on your area really. I've noticed here the peg board by the bathrooms at GC seem to be the place to scout talent. Shame.

Networking is the best way - ask people you play with or have played with in the past if they might know somebody. If that doesn't work, then, yeah, ads are good. In a large city you can also try talking to people on the street who are walking around with instrument cases, too.

The Internet is a great tool for just about anything it seems these days, and IMO to answer your question it is very useful when trying to find new band members or a band to join. I find Facebook and Craigslist the best methods they are free and generally provide results. The thing I find most though when dealing on the Internet is what I like to call the "Interested, then suddenly not interested" vibe from people some people. However that can happen anywhere and people will be people. Networking is another good way, and I do not always mean Online social networking when I say that. Face to face and Human interaction is a physical and not always digital manner is still a good thing.

In my experience, Jam nights are the best way to meet new musicians and bands. In the last couple of months I've been invited to join 4 bands/projects all without needing to audition with the added advantage that you know straight away if they are musicians that you would want to enter into a long term project with.

Plus they also serve beer, you don't get that on Facebook/CList/etc

The trick is, instead of posting ads to Craig's List et al saying "band seeking guitarist" or whatever, you text/Tweet/Facebook to musicians that you already know telling them that your band is seeking a guitarist/whatever. Solicit recommendations; let people you know vet the potential bandmates so that you can weed out at least some of the yahoos.

I think it all comes down to "you never know what you are going to get".
The last group I was in (if you want to call it a group, sheesh) was the biggest flop one could ask for.
After two months of trying to get four songs down, dealing with a "Guitard" in every sense of the word (showing up to practice with two 4x12 cabs pumping out at least 200 watts, never learning what we were supposed to be learning...my ears never rang so hard after a jam then the way they did after I played with this guy), dealing with a singer who never showed up, and last, but not least, a suck-ass drummer who would stop the song we were playing pretty much every time we tried to play one saying, "You aren't playing it right", and he always kept our practices down to two hours or it would cut into his World of Warcraft time.
God I must have been desperate, gives me a headache just thinking about it.

Jams, gigs, and networking to me seem to be the best.
