I'm not sure about that. Prince: 'The Internet is over'
July 5, 2010, 4:20 PM EST
Music superstar Prince is adamant he will never sell his songs on the Internet, insisting Web-based outlets will soon disappear because they are no longer "hip."
The "Purple Rain" hitmaker has long battled to keep his music offline -- in 2007 he sued YouTube.com and eBay.com claiming they "are clearly able (to) filter porn and pedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorized music and film content, which is core to their business success."
Prince has also moved to ban fansites using images and anything linked to his likeness, while a home video of a child dancing to one of his songs on YouTube was pulled down in 2007 after the star's Universal Music Publishing claimed the recording infringed copyright.
The artist is still refusing to allow Web sites to sell his music and he's adamant fans will soon move on from the Internet.
He says, "The Internet's completely over. I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it.
"The Internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you.
Any thoughts? |

youtube uses the same mechanism for getting rid of copyrighted material - other folks informing them of violations.
maybe he needs to get the few fans he still has to comb through youtube and have them report the material that he doesn't want.
lol @ the internet's over. what a maroon. yeah, folks are gonna go back to riding horses and using outhouses soon too - cars and plumbing are so 20th century.

| | | Oh thank you Prince!! I was so worried if the internet was hip or not. I am ever so grateful that ' He ' has issued forth ' His ' opinion on the matter. I am enlightened, now that the master of all that is cool has spoken. |

| | | | What Prince said sounds almost tongue-in-cheek, but he has had some pretty strange disputes with the music industry, and he's uber-protective of his intellectual property to the point of alienating many of his fans. I've only heard people say Prince is a musical genius (which he most certainly is); I don't know how he rates on any other subject.

Prince is incredibly talented, but a genius? I'd agree that he was very driven and successful in his marketing schemes in the early days of his career but, again, "genius" seems a little over the top to me as a suitable label. His output has been significant, but so has the output of Stephen King, and I'd hesitate to call King a "literary genius". Maybe I set the bar too high for what I think constitutes a genius... |

IIRC, the teacher said that, at best, Prince only had average talent.
He also said, again IIRC, that Prince wanted it more and worked harder than anyone he knew.
So not a genius, but I found that story inspiring personally. He's not some gift from on high. Just a guy that worked his ass off when it counted.
