I've been reading posts on this forum for a few months now, and I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Patrick Culley and I did my first successful gig as a bassist last Saturday night. Successful, thanks in large part to information I got from reading these posts.
I've been playing guitar for about 15 years now, started playing mandolin about 7 years ago, but never got involved with a serious band (though lots of false starts). A good friend of mine (killer guitar player) asked me last year if I'd play bass in a cover band he was putting together. Without having any clue how to play bass, nor any idea what kind of gear I'd need, I said, "Sure, why not?" A quick Google search brought me to TalkBass, where I learned about technique, taste, tone, and handy tools like the Fender P-Bass and the SansAmp BDDI. Needless to say, by the time our "audition" gig rolled around, I sounded like a million bucks! Also, I'm having more fun playing bass than guitar or mandolin; it's quickly become my primary instrument.
So, thanks again to everyone for creating such a helpful community for bassists. I'll be more active (no pun intended) on the site in the days and weeks to come. My band is doing blues, rock, and country covers, but we're also working on some original "high-octane rockabilly" stuff too. Still deciding on a name. I put some videos of the gig here on
YouTube if you want to check them out.
