| | an actor who wants to run the whole show | | Join Date: May 2004 Location: Bridgeport, CT | | | 10/4: Hartford, CT As promised here's the report. I've seen Maiden a few times and they always deliver a quality performance with an amazing stage show. Last night was no exception. However, I was a little disappointed this time due to their set list.
First of all the stage setup for this tour is awesome. It's all military battle zone themed and looks really cool. Eddie was present as usual, this time in his army uniform like on the album cover. They had bunkers and even a tank thing that was totally rad. There was tons of smoke. and their light show was great as well.
I had the best seats I've ever had for a concert, 6th row almost center. Dickinson was like 40 feet away. They sounded phenomenal. Just being able to see Steve Harris that close was worth the ticket price alone. Watching him play last night completely reinforced all the reasons why he's one of my favorite bass players. He had such amazing stage presence, and was soooooo on point last night. Dickinson sounded great, and the guitaristsss we're shredding up a storm.
Here's the disappointment: After a few songs Dickinson says "we have a special treat for you tonight...We're going to play our new album in it's entirety." That's exactly what they did. After about an hour and a half of that they finally played 4 older songs: Iron Maiden, Fear of the Dark, Two Minutes to Midnight, and Hallowed Be Thy Name. The new album is good, really good, but I've only heard a few songs off it. So the majority of the material they were playing I was hearing for the first time. So I was kinda bummed because when I see Maiden I want to hear my favorites, the classics like: Aces High, The Trooper, Run to the Hills, Number of the Beast, Flight of Icarus, etc...
So, overall it was a great stage show as usual. Their sound was top notch. But I felt kinda burned. Especially after listening to Powerslave the whole way up. Oh well...If you have tickets, go invest in the new album too!

I'm happy to hear that they are going to do it all too. Good selection of songs that are not off of the new album but not exactly what I'd request. Now I'm really revved up. Up The Irons.

MY only complaint was that I thought it was just a bit too loud. And only at times too. Sometimes it seemed that the sound started to blur some. Also, Dickinsons mic crapped out quite a few times when he was really hitting the high stuff. Other than that, it was great.Definitly not a sold out show.
The merchandise booths had some really great shirts but everything was way overpriced. And NO programs. I could not believe it . Thats the only thing I wanted. Oh well.

IMO, a band playing their entire new album is a mistake!!!!! After certain songs, there was NO audience reaction, I could of heard a pin drop. During Lord of Light and The Legacy, I was literally falling asleep!!!!
The old songs they played were OK.
The 1st old songs they played, Fear of the Dark, IMO, not one of their better older songs, got a crowd reaction louder then all previous songs combined. Iron Maiden got a HUGE response. The Evil That Men Do was OK, too. Again, IMO, not one of their better older songs.
The closer, Hollowed Be Thy Name, was great and at this time, you're hungry for more older songs and the house lights come on and you have to go home.
The performance was definitely Iron Maiden!!! BUT, I wish they would get rid of Janick. All the swinging of his guitar, throwing it in the air and over all stage presence is just plain silly.
This, IMO/IME, is one of the worse live shows Ive seen by one of my all time favorite bands.

I heard alot, Alot, of people complaining about the same. Too much new, not enough old. I personaly loved the set.

Slightly different choice of older songs, which I agree are not the best choices. Me and my old-school metalhead buddies all pretty much felt the same way you did. We left dissapointed, cause we didn't get to hear any of our favorite Maiden tunes. I think a mojority of the crowd felt the same too. I can understnd trying to promote the new album, but I think it was a major mistake for a band with that extensive of a catalog to not play their classics.
