I've also learned a lot here though. Pretty sure though, the best thing I learned though is that it's better to practice than it is to sit online and read about it. |

Compressed wisdom.

B. That lots of folks can't get past personality
C. There are people who understand music theory has a logical flow in order to learn it effectively, and who understand that teaching modes before one knows chords is fruitless
D. That jimmym doesn't type capitals because of hand problems
E. That some folks think it's critical to play a bass line exactly like a particular record, even if other bassists with really good ears disagree about what the exact notes are
F. Too many people don't understand basic English- for example it seems about half of TB doesn't know what "endorse" means, and almost as many don't know what "fact" means
G. People think that wood doesn't matter because they can't measure its impact, despite what the ears say
H. That people who believe that wood matters often pin the entire sound of an instrument on one single isolated example without considering all the other variables
I. People still think that stringing through the body adds "tension" to a string and totally ignore the physics of a vibrating string.
J. Morons abound who think that what they like in bass playing is the only standard by which one should judge bassists, and those morons are more often on the "less is better" side than the other side
K. There are a lot of funny, intelligent, and cool folks on TB who share information, patiently teach, and prod discussions
L. There are a lot of people on TB who don't care if they communicate and get all defensive if anyone draws attention to their failures at spelling, grammar, and putting thoughts into a meaningful order
M. There's a lot of people who won't search for a topic before they post, even if there's a thread with the same topic on the first page- we don't ever need another thread about string-through/top-load, brass nuts, roundwounds on a fretless, or whether Carol Kaye played on "Bernadette".
N. There's a lot of curmudgeonly TB folks who yell "do a search first" no matter what the topic is- eve if the last thread was in 2004
O. Jeff Berlin raises some peoples' hackles to the point they ignore the valid teaching he espouses
P. Apparently Pete Wentz isn't a very good bassist
R. That Genz-Benz has really cool customer service
S. That Dave at Avatar pays attention to TB
T. That Larry Knetchel played the bass on "Turn, Turn, Turn" by The Byrds (I thought it was Joe Osborn)
U. That people don't know who played on stuff because they don't look at liner notes- e.g. several people say that Joe Osborn played on America's "Horse With No Name" based solely on his name being on credits for later albums, or that Tony Levin played on Don McLean's "American Pie" because he's listed on the credits for the movie "American Pie".
V. That I should hate playing "Mustang Sally" and "Brown Eyed Girl", and if I don't there's must be something wrong with me
W. Lots of bass players don't have a clue about fiscal responsibility
X. Some folks think that anything negative posted is a "slam" and get upset if others disagree
Y. Lots of people think that saying "it sucks" is a valid critical evaluation
Z. That Ampeg is still the best amp in the world, and because I don't like them I'm not a bassists- that and the fact that I play a US made Lakland I'm a victim of the marketing world and should be happy with an SX.
John
