Jackson 5 EQing

Sign in to disble this ad
I don't know if this is the wrong forum to post this in. I haven't posted on here in ages, but I'm really trying to figure this out.

My band's is going to be on a compilation of Michael Jackson music to pay tribute. We're going to do I Want You Back by the Jackson 5.

I'm absolutely in love with Wilton Felder's bassline, and I've got it down, but I'm trying to figure what EQing I should use to get a sound more like the original (I know I can't get it exactly right, but I just want it closer). I've figured out that boosting the mids helps it, but I feel like I'm still missing something. I've never been good at EQing my bass for different sounds. Can anyone give me any tips?

Is your P-bass strung with rounds or flats?

Flats will help, but otherwise try this. Roll the tone knob down to 50% or less.

I'm not familiar with your amp. Try setting it flat or adding a tiny bit of bass boost.

So much of this sound is the touch & feel. You have to keep the feel bouncy. I feel like I can get closer to the original sound on my DB than I can on my P-bass. Why? Because I know how to get that bounce on DB, yet not so much on the BG. That break down section still kicks my ass on DB though. I have it up to about 80BPM and then it falls apart.
