Jazz album recommendations?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking to get a few jazz albums. There are probably a lot of subgenres that I'm not as familiar with because I'm relatively new to the scene. What I'm looking for though, is stuff with a style similar to this, if it helps to understand what I'm looking for:
YouTube - Dave Brubeck - Take The 'A' Train - 1966

I'm working on jazz and the Real Book, but the only jazz album I have is Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet. As with any genre, I need to start listening to this style more to get better at playing

Both great albums, but not really in the style the OP asked for. I'd recommend other stuff from the same era on the Blue Note label: "Go" by Dexter Gordon, "Idle Moments" by Grant Green, "Somethin' Else" by Cannonball Adderly.

Oh, and it's "Heavy Weather" BTW

Blue Train
Kind of Blue
As much Louis Armstrong as you can get
Anything with Kenny Burrell
As much Duke Ellington as you can get
Milestones
Nefertitti (sp?)
Coltrane at the Village Vanguard
Bill Evans at the VV (splurging for the box set is worth every penny)
Anything with Ron Carter
Anything with Paul Chambers
Count Basie in Vegas
Ken Burns: Charlie Parker

That should cover it for now. I left off Mingus and Monk because you need to strengthen your jazz listening skills a bit first (that list is just the very basics). Feel free to PM and don't forget to enjoy yourself while listening (if you begin to not enjoy it, stop immediately and resume later).
