Jazz Bass Laquer question

Hi!

I brought some month ago a 78 Jazz in Perfect conditions,

The only thin i noticed is that somebody done a laquer job, and in some places its starting to wear off. Its like the laquer is braking.

I strip a little off, and the wood became more exposed. My question is: will taking all the laquer off will change something soundwise?

or is the laquer there so the bass shines when you see it?

I say it because not only i like the rough wood feel and look, but because the laquer is starting to come off.
