Jazz Basses and floor stands

Sign in to disble this ad
If there was a forum called "Accessories", I'd post this there...

Is there a good floor stand that will hold a Jazz-style bass? I keep running into the fact that 1) Jazz basses are asymmetrical on the bottom, and 2) floor style stands want your bass to be even on both sides like a P-bass. My basses always lean to one side when I put them in - it's a drag.

(*When I say "floor stand", I mean instrument stands that largely support the bass from the floor and have a very low profile. Ultra, Ultimate, Hercules, and a few others make stands like this. So, not a Tube Stand, not a stand that hangs your bass by the headstock. Dunno what else to call it.)

i use a floor stand for my jazz bass.
its the A shaped one that folds up conveniently.
my one is the K&M stand and the jazz bass will stand straight as long as u put it down on one side instead of middle.
i find that other stands leave black marks on my beautiful maple neck so i chose to use one of these

The cradle on many stands rotates to accomodate either a P, J and many other body styles.

The P deluxe and Geddy are on Hercules stands. The guitar or bass drops into the spring arm which holds the instrument securely. There is also a cushioned T-shaped piece not seen in the photo that pushes the bass away from the bottom legs allowing the bottom to float, so there is no issue with the bass being uneven.

I've used the Hercules stands, and am currently using the Ultimate stands (the hanging type). Both work great.

+1 Both are great, and literally perfect for the Jazz Bass style bodies. And, with their low center of gravity (all the weight is in the body of the instrument), they are actually quite a bit more stable if bumped, etc. than the typical 'floor stand'.

Being the owner of a 74 Jazz, I would use the hanging type anyway. Why? I want the best protection from falling over. My basses all sit in Ultimate stands when they are out and about. I discovered that most low profile stands have a lower center of gravity that leads to a higher chance of "tipping over". They may cost more, but it gives me a greater peace of mind.

I like the idea of just placing the Jazz Bass over about an inch and a half in a floor stand, but I'm klutzy enough that I don't really trust it.

I guess a better explanation of my concept of a "floor stand" would be a stand that doesn't support the neck at all.

The reason why I like this idea is because I have limited mobility and limited space most of the time, and these seem to pack up very well.

That's the answer. I have both of these headstock--hold types, and they work great. They aer also more stable than most stands the bass sits on.

I don't know of any stand that packs more compactly than the Ultimate GS-100. It's great!

So the general opinion is that "If it's a Jazz Bass, and you can't get it to sit off-center and upright, then a non-hanging stand isn't for you." Suckage.

Something will come along this year to address this problem. In fact it was designed because of the Jazz bass problem, but it will work with both offset and non offset designs.

WHY suckage??

It doesn't matter whether it's sitting on a floor stand or hanging by the neck, does it? What possible difference can it make? And when the hanging stand (Ultimate) packs up smaller and is easier to transport than a floor stand, what's the problem??

The goal is to hold the bass securely. No one cares what your stand looks like.
