Jazz/Hip-Hop

I recently had this idea for a Jazz/Hip-Hop band (Jazz-Hop?) and I was wondering if anyone had tried this kind of thing before and what peoples reactions were to it being played live at bars/clubs.

Something along the lines of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Iriv2Dv_LU&fmt=18

Line-up would be bass, drums, keyboard (if we can find a competent jazz pianist), and potentially a dj mixing voices/effects over the top to add to the hip-hop side.

I am a bit apprehensive about what I would play on the bass however. I was thinking a hip-hop rhythm along with the drummer but still try to outline the chords as you do in jazz.

Anywho, thoughts/opinions/experiences are welcome.

Check out The late hip hop artist Guru and his Jazzmatazz series volume's 1-4.

Here's a track from that series that features Bob James and Common.

As far as what to play on bass. Play what ever you sincerely feels is working.

Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking something rather more energetic than the tracks you posted, much more along the lines of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kYY8iMxZKs&fmt=18 (except less dark)

Something people can dance to easily but still unpredictable and eclectic, if that's not a contradiction in terms

But I can see where the bassists in your tracks were coming from, riffs seem to work well.

Well you can get a artist to rap over the style you provided in your link and 95% of your quest is complete.
