i'm really heavy into expiremental punk right now, like the receiving end of sirens and say anything. i'm 16 years old.

the other day i was in the car with my best friend and guitar player jeremy and he had on a jazz radio station. i've been listening to it non stop in school and i'm begining to fall in love with jazz music. if someone could give me a list of smooth jazz instrumental artists and maybe some stuff along the lines of coletrain.

I wouldn't call it smooth, but one of my personal faves is
Mahavishnu Orchestra featuring John McLaughlin on guitar,
Jan Hammer on Keys, Billy Cobham on drums and Rick Laird
on bass.

Jazz is a huge category populated with a myriad of styles
genres and players. You are going to have a lot of fun on this
journey.

If you're into experimental punk, I would recommend some Ornette Coleman (especially Science Fiction), Sun Ra, Miles (Bitches Brew), Coltrane (A Love Supreme, Live at the Village Vanguard)...none of which would really be described as "smooth jazz". Who are some of the artists who have caught your ear so far?

smooth jazz is NOT jazz.

How can I put this...

Smooth Jazz is to Jazz what... Jessica Simpson is to Rock and Roll.

You want Jazz, start with Miles, 'Train, Cannonball Adderly, Lester Young, Charlie Parker.

I find Ornette Coleman to be just too much for me, but there's room for lots of styles in the Jazz tent - - just not "Smooth" jazz which is, to me at least, Muzak.

i'm not look to get insulted about the words that i use. i'm trying to expand my horizons. thanks for the suggestions but that was a little bit rude. i only called it smooth jazz because thats what it's called on itunes radio and i enjoy listening to it.

and jessica simpson is pop. and she knows it as well as everyone else. i think your thinking of her sister who calls herself a punk pop star.

While I agree that there was no need to be harsh, hating smooth jazz is something that a lot of jazz fans are very passionate about. The Jessica Simpson analogy wasn't quite right. I imagine most jazz fans look at smooth jazz the way punk fans look at Blink182 and Good Charlotte.

That said, jazz is a huge and very diverse genre. Anything that can cover Tony Bennet and the 1970s ECM stuff is incredibly wide-ranging. That's why I asked if there were any artists in particular who had caught your ear.

He wasn't insulting you. He was correcting you and insulting smooth jazz at the same time, which I support.

Understand, you mentioned smooth jazz and Coltrane in the same breath and they are at opposite ends of the jazz spectrum.

Unless you know specifically what kind of jazz you dig, just read his post again and start listening to the names he suggested. Bebop is where you should begin in my opinion if you're not sure.

theres a jazz thread going now with some good ideas........ive found the best way to find stuff is to look at the liner notes for players you liked on something and watch for their names on different projects........those nerdy old dudes at the used vinyl stores can be mined for info and if you ask nice they sometimes let you listen on the headphones.....tho mentioning smooth jazz to those guys might trigger a meltdown

Ask an elevator...

In all seriousness, I don't listen to much jazz (and really don't like a lot of the jazz I've heard, actually.), but I really enjoy Mahavishnu Orchestra, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Django Reinhardt and Charles Mingus.

Disclosure: there's a lot of variety between those five musicians/groups.

We're so glad you cleared this up for us, Harry .

Anyway, back to the subject at hand: here are three albums (yes, the vinyl things that scratch easily) which turned me onto jazz (oops!!!)- I mean, muzak (my most sincere apologies to Big Ol Harry ).

Grover Washington Jr. - Winelight

Lee Ritenour - Rit

Chic Corea - Light Years

Welcome to the world of jazz. It's a blast. I won't get into the controversy over smooth jazz, except to say that I enjoy other jazz styles more. My only advice is that you need to turn back the clock to earlier times, particularly the period from the swing era through bebop, to get yourself a good grounding in jazz that would let you eventually start playing gigs.

Well, 48 hours was certainly plenty of time to explore a genre that spans a century. It's taken me more then 30 years.

But admittedly, when I was 16, I chose punk rock too. Been there, done that.

I'd recommend to check out artists like Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Pat Metheny, Donald Byrd, John Coltrane and Chick Corea. These are not overly experimental (except later Miles Davis), but tasteful jazz. Pat Metheny is perhaps in the middle between jazz and classical in the sense the music is composed in a very detailed fashion, almost like classical music. I love his music, especially with the Pat Metheny Group.

I've bought Miles Davis' Bitches Brew album, but I can't say I enjoy that. I don't enjoy Mahavishnu either. Just too out for my taste. Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" is worth to be checked out though.

Pat Metheny - Imaginary day
John Scofield - Uberjam
Herbie Hancock - headhunters
Marcus Miller - Live and more
John Mc Laughlin - The heart of things
Richard Bona - Tiki

These are some of my favorite Cds; in a more groovy, fusion, or world music perspective of jazz. Peharps i will be fired by purists, but i don't care

Listen to some Kenny G if you dig Jazz.

Joking Listen to Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis. It was the album that showed me what Jazz was all about.
