i'm really heavy into expiremental punk right now, like the receiving end of sirens and say anything. i'm 16 years old.
the other day i was in the car with my best friend and guitar player jeremy and he had on a jazz radio station. i've been listening to it non stop in school and i'm begining to fall in love with jazz music. if someone could give me a list of smooth jazz instrumental artists and maybe some stuff along the lines of coletrain. |

Mahavishnu Orchestra featuring John McLaughlin on guitar,
Jan Hammer on Keys, Billy Cobham on drums and Rick Laird
on bass.
Jazz is a huge category populated with a myriad of styles
genres and players. You are going to have a lot of fun on this
journey.

Who are some of the artists who have caught your ear so far? |

How can I put this...
Smooth Jazz is to Jazz what... Jessica Simpson is to Rock and Roll.
You want Jazz, start with Miles, 'Train, Cannonball Adderly, Lester Young, Charlie Parker.
I find Ornette Coleman to be just too much for me, but there's room for lots of styles in the Jazz tent - - just not "Smooth" jazz which is, to me at least, Muzak.

and jessica simpson is pop. and she knows it as well as everyone else. i think your thinking of her sister who calls herself a punk pop star. |

The Jessica Simpson analogy wasn't quite right. I imagine most jazz fans look at smooth jazz the way punk fans look at Blink182 and Good Charlotte.
That said, jazz is a huge and very diverse genre. Anything that can cover Tony Bennet and the 1970s ECM stuff is incredibly wide-ranging. That's why I asked if there were any artists in particular who had caught your ear. |

Understand, you mentioned smooth jazz and Coltrane in the same breath and they are at opposite ends of the jazz spectrum.
Unless you know specifically what kind of jazz you dig, just read his post again and start listening to the names he suggested. Bebop is where you should begin in my opinion if you're not sure.

In all seriousness, I don't listen to much jazz (and really don't like a lot of the jazz I've heard, actually.), but I really enjoy Mahavishnu Orchestra, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Django Reinhardt and Charles Mingus.
Disclosure: there's a lot of variety between those five musicians/groups. |

Anyway, back to the subject at hand: here are three albums (yes, the vinyl things that scratch easily) which turned me onto jazz (oops!!!)- I mean, muzak (my most sincere apologies to Big Ol Harry ). Grover Washington Jr. - Winelight
Lee Ritenour - Rit
Chic Corea - Light Years

I won't get into the controversy over smooth jazz, except to say that I enjoy other jazz styles more. My only advice is that you need to turn back the clock to earlier times, particularly the period from the swing era through bebop, to get yourself a good grounding in jazz that would let you eventually start playing gigs. |

But admittedly, when I was 16, I chose punk rock too. Been there, done that. |

These are not overly experimental (except later Miles Davis), but tasteful jazz. Pat Metheny is perhaps in the middle between jazz and classical in the sense the music is composed in a very detailed fashion, almost like classical music. I love his music, especially with the Pat Metheny Group.
I've bought Miles Davis' Bitches Brew album, but I can't say I enjoy that. I don't enjoy Mahavishnu either. Just too out for my taste. Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" is worth to be checked out though.
