Question Jazz (and other ?) in Chicago

Hello all,

I'm going to be there for a couple of nights, specifically tomorrow night & Friday. What are some good spots to hear jazz, preferably in the downtown area?

Thanks,
flyman

Check out www.chicagoreader.com. They have a searchable calendar where you can search by area (Central for Downtown) and date.

Here are a couple for Friday...

Von Freeman Quintet
Andy's
11 E. Hubbard
River North (just north of "Downtown")
take a taxi

Douglas Ewart and Inventions
Velvet Lounge
67 E. Cermak
Near South Side
take a taxi

Ryan Cohan Quartet
Pops for Champagne
601 N. State
River North (just north of "Downtown")
take a taxi

I'm sure that there are more.

Jazz Showcase-Jason Marsalis Vibe Quartet is there.
806 S Plymouth Ct -it's pretty close to the Harrison Red Line station. You'd walk south 2-3 blocks and then take a right. I lived in the dorm near the Harrison station for 2 years.

In my experience, Jazz Showcase has been a bit more expensive than most of the other places.

A huge +1 to checking out Von Freeman. He's well worth the trip.

Not close to Downtown, but extremely easy to get to via public transit is the Green Mill.
4802 N Broadway.
Take the Red Line north to Lawrence. Once you are out of the station, take a left. It's at the end of the block-diagonally across the street. Chris Foreman is doing a happy set for free on Friday and there is music until about 4AM.

Check out Andy's for jazz, Green Dolphin Street, or Pops for Campaign. All great places. If you don't mind going a little bit north, The Green Mill is in Uptown - Al Capone used to frequent this place, and his old booth is still in use to this day! I'm actually going there tonight. Pops tends to be more on the mellow side of jazz, whereas Green Dolphin Street tends to be more along the lines of "danceable" jazz.

Chicago's a good jazz town, but is actually more known for its blues scene. If you check out any Chicago Blues (which I highly recommend), make sure it's a smaller club, as the bands are really intimate and entertaining! Blue Chicago on Clark is very easy to get to from downtown, as it's just north of the Loop - within walking distance - and is in a good neighborhood. Blues is a sister club of Blue Chicago and is about a block away. Both places feature house bands.
