Hi there, I think bass guitar is more better in a jazz trio 'cause is more modern and by the way it could remember the our master Jaco, plus you can think about john patitucci and richard bona, look at pat metheny and bona playing "bright size life" on you tube, it's amazing. The jazz trio with a bass guitar smell like 60's and 70's when the bass guitars take the buisness in all the world.
also you can listen to yellow jackets, where the bassist is a lefty and play the bass withe the detro's sequence of strings, HE PLAY IN THE OPPOSITE WAY!!, and they are fantastic.
