Jazzy tune to play with jam band?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been asked to bring a jazz tune to the table and I'm having trouble finding something for this group... 1 Marshall half stack / Gibson SG / Semihollow guitarist, 1 Crate quarter-stack / strat guitarist, a cat on the keys, and another on the skins.... It's a jam band group and the main bands that gets toss around are Phish and Widespread Panic, I'm just kind of holding down the low end in this gig, I play more blues and jazz my grooving fits with the guys

So what jazz cover can I pull out that'll sound good with this line up?... I'm looking into stuff like Chameleon, Cantelope Island, All Blues but I'm having trouble laying something down.... I especially don't want to bastardize something like Autumn Leaves either but would like something the band can groove too.... The drummer and I'll do fine with whatever tune, he's got some decent chops and we've played some standards before just as a rhythm section between songs and downtime in practice....

Suggestions?

Why not something like "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed?" I know it's an old rock song, but when I play it for my kids at school they always say, "That's some pretty cool jazz, Davis." Or, you could do "Sonnymoon for Two," which is really just a 12 bar Bb Blues. "Stolen Moments" could be good too. You could make the intro/verse section kind of spacey/trippy, then shift to blues in C and rock out, then back to the spacey stuff again.

Thought of a couple more:
Coming Home Baby; Zach Breaux has a pretty good version
Maiden Voyage (could be very cool); Herbie Hancock

How about some funk or fusion? The chicken, chameleon, havona, watermelon man, teentown? Or some modal jazz: Ole (John Coltrane), So What, Impressions?
