The people that are capable of enjoying those things have money....... Boating in the Caribbean isn't a poor man's hobby.
Targeting a group that has a good bit of disposable income is a very wise move if you hope to get some of it for yourself. Also, He get's to play his shows in some pretty nice locations.
Props to Jimmy Buffett! |

| | | | I was a big Buffett fan in the 70s and 80s, lost track after that (of alot of things!). Never enjoyed PLAYING his songs, but sure enjoyed listening, drinking and lounging to them. Glad to see he made it through - alot of our heroes haven't. |

Came out of there thinking he was the Krusty the Klown of music i.e. merchandised everything. There were t-shirts, flip flops, mugs, tequila, mix, blenders, golf balls, back scratchers, licence plates, etc. You name it, it had his stamp on it. All that was missing was the "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw Home Pregnancy Test". There, it's in print and dated. I now get a cut should he endorse one. : :

That article from Dec 24 2012 mentions $400M but that is his 2010 worth. It's probably several $M higher with the recent openings of some big locations.

Buffett has toured for forty years and been smart with his cash, you have to admire that. We live in an era of corporate raiders that make 400 million shuffling a little paper around, I have no problem with a musician making a little cash in four decades of hard work.

Why hell, no wonder!!! If I were fortunate enough to have to not play a bunch of lame-ass songs about....Uh, let's see here...... Let's say uh, some goofy-ass songs about white, sandy beaches, with beautiful sunsets & only the finest liquors. Hell, I'd be worth that damn much, too.
But, I'm seriously worried about his career. He's had way,way too many releases over the years, which keeps him from playing his classics. Which is career suicide, if you ask me. |

Look at Neil Diamond or Santana or many others who haven't released anything in years and are huge and sell out every venue overseas. The US isn't the only game in town any longer.

When I go to a show, or watch a DVD, it's not to witness great musicianship -although that's a perk his band can deliver. He's frequently self-depricated his skills as a guitarist. I'm looking for a mental vacation while enjoying a margarita (a real one with 100% agave tequila, triple sec, and fresh lime juice - NEVER marg mix). I admit it. I'm a Parrothead. I even bit & bought a "University of Margaritaville" sticker for the rear window of my car (which sadly blew a head gasket and breathed its last over the holiday).

However, IMHO, the best thing about JB's songs is that they make money. I'm not sure how many of them will live on after he is gone, for anything contained within them. Only time will tell.

The US isn't the only game in town any longer. | The interesting thing about Buffet these days is that his CD's ARE selling... most going platinum due to his HUGE touring fan base. He is selling more 'albums' now than he did back when he had a few hits.
Truly an inspiration regarding how to last, make decent music (also not my thing, but I've learned to not confuse 'what I don't like' with 'what is bad' as I get older), having a long lasting career, treating employees well (from talking with my friends in his band) and giving the customer/listener a great 'bang for the buck' experience.
IMO.... very impressive 'machine' he has going there.
My favorite Buffett trivia is (if I have this right) there are only three authors who have had the number one selling book in the fiction and non-fiction categories at the same time (again, might not have this exactly right... same time, ever... can't remember).
J.D. Salinger
Hemingway
Jimmy Buffett
I'm not kidding.

ps, Buffett's name has two 't's - the 'buffet' where you eat has one 't'.
