That's a tough one. He was my Idol for many years. If I have to choose, it would be Songwriter, but remeber, he wrote most of the music, but lyrics for, what, 3 or 4 songs. I think JPJ came up with the riff for "Black Dog" and some of the other famous ones, but "Stariway to Heaven" no matter how burnt out on it you are puts him up there with the best.

I voted better writer, but a close one. He's got so many phenomenal licks, but I think he's written more great songs than great licks.

What always amazes me when I go back and listen to those Led Zep albums is how many different colours and tones he got out of guitar - the huge variety of sound!

Nowadays guitarists have recourse to much more technology and yet they all seem to sound the same!

I just don't like Led Zeppelin at all... As a vocalist I can say Robert Plant annoyed the hell out of me, I hate his voice. And Jimmy Page ? Not a fan... not at all.

There are plenty of rude things I can say about the band, im glad they did what they did and inspired some of the music I listen to, but if you really want to get me out of a room, put on led zeppelin.

Most over rated band ever, is all I'll say.

Maybe so my friend, but I just do what my ears tell me to do. And when i hear Led Zep, its swear in disbelief.

I think a huge problem of mine is anything that is "loved" by a LOT of people turns me off. All the "Jimmy page is the bestezt guitarizt in teh worldzer" talk really make's me quite angry.

o well, we all like what we like, and for some reason Led Zep, and The Beatles are a huge pain in the Ear to me, drive me nuts.

so, Rakie: would you consider Jimmy Page a better guitarist, or a better songwriter?

I recognize that their ability to write and play catchy tunes caught a huge following, while I dont like it in the least I can appreciate what they did, and what they achieved.

I would say, since I don't like his playing, at all. Songwriter. I can't deny he wrote songs that captivated millions. I can just say *I* dont like it.

he certainly did a good job of hooking fans, Honestly I think id like their music much more if it had a different lineup...

Bonham was good, i liked him. Page... not a fan, i like really clean playing and he was pretty dirty as far as im concerned, and Plant, just not a voice I dig.

Honestly with all that against them, its technically impossible for me to like anything from them, haha.

Seeing as many of Zep's songs are someone else's I think he's a better guitarist.

Yea, a lot of people don't know most of their songs are old blues songs, just rearranged.

I think that's a very shallow view - they took Blues as their basis, as almost every artist in the late 60s did and turned it into something entirely new - you could say the same about Cream, BluesBreakers, Yardbirds etc etc

Blues is the basis for most Jazz as well - but it's what you create from those roots!

Led Zep's albums sound nothing like the Blues on which they were based - "Kashmir" for example sounds like nothing else, before or since - except when it was sampled!!

At least Led Zep credited some Blues players - most just stole shamelessly!

I was around in the early 70s when "House of the Holy" came out and nothing sounded like that before - it was completely original!

Go listen to your death metal techno junk and leave the good listening to others who appreciate it. And for someone who hates Zeppelin so much, one or two posts on this thread would have sufficed.

Oh, about Jimmy. That's a very tough question. Other guitarist were perhaps more gifted, but there's no question that he was plenty good enough to sell millions of records. And Page had an aura about him that made him very interesting. Add his songwriting and producing skills and there is no other like him.
