Mid-day concert on NPR April 2008. Graham Maby on bass. Mostly songs from his new record "Rain".

I'm getting blocked here at work - can't open the show.

However, I *did* get to see him do this show live last Friday in Philadelphia (well, Glenside, PA, to be technically correct). GREAT show!!! The only thing I wish is that Graham would have been a little louder. A couple of times someone yelled out to turn him up in the mix but I guess the sound men knew better? They never complied. Oh well. It was still a great show.

That was the first time I heard any of the material from Rain but it was really good, especially since it was written and recorded with the same band. I also loved the way he re-worked some of the older songs. He came up with some really cool arrangements for them. Still would have been nice to have Gary Sanford back with the band for the old stuff, though. I'm not sure why he isn't with them now.

Anyway, if you have a chance to go, GO!!!

EDIT - I just noticed that the performance was recorded at WXPN and World Cafe Live. I love that radio station (it's the University of Pennsylvania's) and the club, which the radio station runs, is a fantastic place to see a concert. If you have an opportunity to go there, GO!!!

I was at the same show and we sat directly behind the sound man. Yes, the bass was too low in the mix.

If it makes you feel better, the bass sounds good in the NPR replay.

That's cool, I'll just have to wait until I get home tonight to hear it. I have much better speakers there than I have at work anyway.

The reason I went to Joe's web site is that I'm seeing him tonight in Washington DC at a club called "930".

The last time I went to see Joe at 930 was the beginning of his previous tour, when he was first working on the trio sound, actually Washington was the first stop on the tour. He played some new songs then including a funny song about being drunk which didn't get to "Rain" unfortunately. Luckily for me I recorded the concert on my handy dandy MiniDisc machine (shhh....).

The last time I saw Joe at 930 it was the worst concert sound I have ever heard at any venue. I'm not very much looking forward to the show tonight despite being a huge, HUGE HUGE megafan going all the way back to "Look Sharp!".

Happy to report that the sound was quite good this time around and the performance was up to Joe's usual standards. Graham Maby is my all-time favorite bass player. My recording unfortunately didn't quite work as well as I would have liked though.
