My faves are the Brandenberg Concertos and the Italian Concerto.

Bach is awesome. My personal favorites include Prelude in G Major(Cello Suite #1) and most all of his Chorales.

So to the point. What is your favorite of Bach's work you like to play on you bass? | Classical music was my first love and I read his biography so long ago (4th grade) that I can only remember a little. His whole family was musical, he had something like 12 siblings and went blind pretty early. Whenever I get out my double bass or bass guitar I run it through a tuning warm up with "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and at the rock gigs you can imagine the odd expressions! Procol Harem's "Whiter Shade of Pale" is almost a direct lift from Bach, as are many of those rapid fire triplet solos of Ritchie Blackmore on Machine Head. Some of my favorites are the famous Tacatta and Fugue for Organ, all of the Brandenburg Concerti, and many of the preludes.
Some Other Baroque and Classical composers I enjoy are Handel, Schubert, Beethoven (saw Ritchie Blackmore and Roger Glover cover the 9th Symphony at the Fox here once... Devastating!!!!!), Hayden, Mozart (I like his piano sonatas but not a whole lot else). Some people think it is snob music, but consider when Beethoven died, more than 20,000 people showed up at his funeral. He was like Elvis.

As for my favourite Bach piece to play on bass, it used to be the preludio from partita #3 in E major... I tried to learn it on bass because I was so impressed hearing Béla Fleck play it on the banjo.

| | | | I studied classical guitar at one time. I sure wish I had stuck with it. Oh, I can still play, but you really have to stay on top of the practice and study or it leaves you.
I did two songs for my jury recital at college and one was J.S. Bach's Bouree In E Minor. Jethro Tull copped that one and called it simply, Bouree.
I like Bach, but Beethoven is more a favorite. Beethoven can almost put me into a trance-like state. Moonlight Sonata is arguably the prettiest piano piece of all time.

| | | | bach is very challenging on piano/ organ. My teacher is constantly saying how much my technique needs work when I pull out a bach piece we're working on, because I'm really tense and I shouldn't be.
However, my personal favorite composer would be sergei rachmaninoff. I'm playing prelude in c# minor at several recitals tomorrow.
I haven't made up my mind about beethoven, I don't really have him in my list of repertoire. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
