JUAN ALDERETE´S TONE ON TMV?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello to all, the purpose of this thread is to ask if some of you fellow bassists know what gear was used by Juan Alderete de La Peña to record his MONSTER tone on the The Mars Volta album Francis the Mute, specially on the cut L´via L Viaquez

Thanks in advance, finally i think i found the deep, full, and snarling tone that i kept hearing in my head until i discovered this jewel.

He uses an assortment of Fender Jazzes, P's, all from the 60s and 70s, some fretless, an Ampeg 8X10 and an SVT head. Lots of effects too. Bass synth wah, chorus, etc...

Can talk about all of his basses but i believe fender did a CS bass for him that sported 2 darkstar pickups, it was a black jazz bass (american standard style) with tort guard and rosewood fingerboard, and thats whats hes been using lastly

There's some info here which you may find of interest:

New Juan Alderete Signature Series Fender Bass

Make sure you read the last two (more recent) pages.

One of his basses is actually on ebay right now. He says he is switching to lakland, so his fenders are for sale.

Thanks Fresnorich.

In one of his auction info he says that the '73 Precision he was selling was used to cut L´Via L´Viaquez, i´ll settle with that for now.....

Best resource available, especially about his Frances the Mute tone. Mostly a fretless P/J, but I think it was a J on Cygnus, and a fretted P/J on one or two tracks. He didn't receive the dual-Darkstarred one till around Amputechtre (or even later). The list of gear is at the bottom of that article.

Here's the picture from the article in question on his effects rig.

He recorded that album with a Fretless P bass with an added J pickup for his solos. - Juan has stated in the past that he likes to use a P bass with distortion - that album has distorted Precision all over it.

The next album, Amputechture sounds much much less like a P bass, and I'm guessing it may have that Darkstar'd J bass.

I love his tone from Frances the Mute - I can readily hear John Wetton's tonal influence on it, esp in the end of the first song of "Miranda", the end of "Cygnus", the first song of "Cassandra" and throughout much of the album.
