He just released a solo album named 'Transmigration' that IMO is amazing. He's toured/recorded with many artists like Gloria Estefan, John Secada, Grover Washington Jr., Cyndi Lauper, etc.... Google Bakhiti Kumalo, and you will get some hits that will better lead you to where you can find his music. He is definitely one of my favorites. If you go to Bassplayer.tv you can see his clinc from last years Bass Player Live event.

Edit..... I just watched the video you linked, and that is not Bakhiti playing with Paul.

Yeah, that's Armand Sabal-Lecco, who is a super talented cat in his own right and has played with some very big names including Jeff Beck and Stanley Clarke. But only Bakithi sounds like Bakithi.

Graceland is, without a doubt, one of the best albums ever!

I don't have "Transmigration" yet, but "San Bonan" is always in heavy rotation. I really dig Bakithi.

I had the opportunity to speak with him on the phone a few times when I worked at Bass Central, he is a very nice guy as well.

If you notice, right after his solo break, the crowd roars with applause. As the camera pans away, you can see that huge smile on his face. Still one of the all time greatest bass hooks ever.

Man- I had read that that break was double(or more)-tracked in the studio, but it sure sounded like he hit it all pretty clean! The smile makes it even better.

bakithi is brilliant. the line on diamonds on the soles of ehr shoes is one of my favorite lines ever, and one of the reasons i first picked up a bass.

It wasn't double tracked. He recorded the first half of the break and the second half is the first half backwards.

Right- I think that's what I actually heard/read...
My fuzzy 'memory' fails me again.

On the other Paul Simon record - The Rhythm of the Saints - is some really sick bass playing too, Bakhiti included.

I recently bought one of his old basses. My lined fretless USA 55-94 Deluxe (originally built for and previously owned by Bakhiti Kumalo, and I confirmed this with the Kirk @ Lakland). Not sure if I love playing fretless enought to keep her yet. , butthe bass sure is beautiful and plays great and sounds amazing!

I just got that in the post the other day. Some absolutely beautiful songs and some more amazing bass playing from Bakithi! Truely one of the greats!

Yeah, I was wondering if Bakithi had lost a ton of weight!!

Bakithi Kumalo

Effects?

Obviously I am not ever going to sound like BK but since you guys seem well-informed - what is he using on "graceland" and "boy in the bubble"? Is it a chorus pedal or an octaver of some kind? I have a fretless but I can't even come close to his tone.

I like it very much, but I'm actually partial to the follow-up album "Rhythm of the Saints."
