Just had my first gig

hey all, I'm 15 and just had my first gig ever. it was a band play-off thing. not a competition, no prizes just local bands getting together and playing. my drummer organized it because his brother ran it. we were told 1 WEEK IN ADVANCE. we had no clue what to do, so we just started rehearsing a instrumental version of hey joe by hendrix. since we only had one song and the rest had at least 30mins of set, we wanted to go first and just be the warm-up gig. so we went first.

we walked onto the small stage with probs 50 people in the audience, mostly members of bands families and sound guys. so the five of us walked on, drummer, 3 guitarists (i know it's too many, one wants to do vocals but didn't wanna sing hendrix) and of course, me on bass.

i had my squire (i'm not rich, it's the best i got, preformed well anyways) and started quick sound check. the bass and drums overpowered the guitars and the guitars didn't have much distortion at all. so really, sound wasn't fantastic, i was really happy bass was heard and i was filling a bit and it sounded cool but guitarists weren't too happy.

we played through then just walked off with equipment and as i walked out i was greeted by another band member who said to me, "good work on the bass mate", which i thought was pretty good.

anyway we packed up our gear then went back to check out some other bands, the guys we watched had 2 female vocalists (one on keys aswell) and guitarist and drummer. it was pretty bad, the drums were heard over everything, no guitar, barely any vocals, and the vocals i did hear were quite out of key.

anyway, that was my first gig, didn't get paid, because it was really just experience.
thanks for reading.

Cool - glad to hear you enjoyed it and I hope you get to do many more.

Strictly speaking this isn't really "Off Topic", so I'll ask one of my mod colleagues to move this to another forum.

Could I also ask you to take a minute to fill out your profile? If people know where you're from, you might make some useful local contacts. You never know.

glad you had a great time. don't be so down on squier. they have some respectable basses. As long as you were comfortable and had fun.

Congrats on getting your feet wet! Did you enjoy it? Hopefully you also learned something about playing live. Too bad you only had one week to prepare, but it's cool you got a nod from another musician! That's something to be proud of!

Do yourself a favor and don't apologize for your gear! It's what you have and it makes you happy.
