Key-bass anyone?

I've just recently thought about getting a keyboard to play around with and start learning piano but a friend of mine told me that you could modulate the keyboard to play lower frequency notes. So now I'm thinking of playing live key-bass. Has anyone had experience with this? What keyboard would you recommend?

I'm somewhat looking into this; I love 80s-era synth stuff in general(OMD, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, etc)& have a couple of old analog synths. These sound great but take up a lot of space, so right now I'm researching a controller+laptop rig. At this point I really don't know enough to comment, but I will watch this thread for my own devious purposes.

You may want to check out the Korg R3. It is a really cool little synth, and you can usually score one for under $500. It has some really nice synth bass (and plenty other) presets plus all the tone shaping stuff you would expect...And it has a vocorder. The only drawback is it is a little short on memory. I picked one up last month, and have been using it pretty steady without getting tired of it. Hope this helps.

+1 the R3 is a good budget choice. If you want to really expirience analog synth at it's purest, find a Moog Little Phatty. I regret selling mine more than any bass I've sold. I still have a Korg X-50, but there's just something special about having complete control of your signal, and the phatty-ness.
