Keyboard Advice for Bassist

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I don't play any keyboards at all. However, I've been intrigued to get one for quite some time. The reasons are:

Improve as a musician (and as a bassist specifically I'd think)
Writing, Recording Projects
Fun

I recently recorded a 4 song demo with my band and our friend at the studio played some Hammond Organ and Fender Rhodes on it. It really added alot to it.

I am not set on 88 keys vs not, etc. I'm pretty open to anything. As far as budget, I'm not sure. I guess I'd prefer to stay within about $1000 or so. I do really like all the vintage key sounds like Hammond as oppossed to playing keyboard bass.

Thoughts, suggestions?

I'm not sure I have time for lessons right now with 2 bands, so I'd start at home trying to teach myself. Any suggestions here is cool too!

You can get a really good keyboard for $1,000.

Yes a keyboard rounds out everything. We can "see" theory as it's laid out in a straight line.

Time - Start as if you were going the classical route, until you get your fingers knowing how to get to and find the notes. Then you have several choices. Continue down the classical road or play from lead sheets or fake chord, i.e. you wing the bass line which should not be any problem.

I enjoy chord accompaniment to my vocals, i.e. playing from fake chord sheet music. Because of my vocals we do this only at home. LOL

Good luck I think you will enjoy your keyboard. You may find the following helpful. http://www.pianoworld.com/forum/

Here is a book I would recommend it's a classic and your public library may have it.
