Keyless Guitar Tuners?

I saw a guitar a few years back that came from the factory with keyless tuners. Basically, there was no key on the tuner, instead, there was a large gear that you turn on the back. It was on a strat or tele style headstock, I can't remember. But it looked great.

But I can't remember the brand of the guitar or of the tuners. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

Gibson/Epiphone Firebird?
I currently have one on long term loan that is more like you describe (no tuning key shapes at all, just the round barrels) than this:

WOW, that's got to be one of the coolest thing's I've seen for a while.

How long have these been around?

HOW the HELL did I miss these?

Any possibility of some reverse engineering and/or more info?

Oh, and BTW, do they work as planned?

Those are basically them, although, they're not exactly what I remember seeing. But they're called Gearless Tuners, and those ones there are made by Steinberger.

Had to use quite the bit of Google Fu to come up with that yesterday.
