I'm putting a band together. So far I have some offers from tamborine players (tamborinists?) and jug players (jugists?), but unfortunately I haven't written any parts for those instruments. Help me out, TB. If you or anybody you know would be interested, please contact me.

The goal is to create a band with an emphasis on composition and improvisation, with a modicum of technique and musicality, while avoiding the cliche and commonplace.

My main instrument is bass, but I'm not opposed to switching to another instrument if a capable bassist comes along. I do not plan on this being MY band - I want it to be a band which works together toward a common goal, rather than having a central figure dominate everything.

Of course, I have a myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/benjaminstrange). I also have a couple of actual websites for various musical stuff - http://www.benjaminstrange.net and http://www.burntinfant.com.

You just named two of my favorite bands and I don't mind Meshuggah. Too bad I'm in MS.

If I was good, and in the area... I'd join in a heartbeat. But I suck... in Edinboro, PA.

Good luck Ben, you have some amazing ideas, all of your solo material is amazinginginging. Finding like minded true progressive (not Dream Theater wannabes) artists is a paaaaiiinn. It shouldn't be, but it is.

Once again, best of luck.

Sounds cool. Good luck making something deliciously weird. I (and everyone I know) am regrettably a good distance from your area.

Once again, I'm never in the right place at the right time. Shortly before I left San Francisco four months ago, I turned down the opportunity to join a band - that band is opening for TOOL next month. I met a girl in San Diego on the way back to New Orleans - she totally wants to have my babies, but she lives 2000 miles away. Now I'm trying to form a band, and everybody who wants to be involved lives everywhere but here.

This sucks.

This sounds like kind of crappy half assed advice, but hear me out (or read me out, I dunno):

Join a band.

Keep your side (main) project... it is perhaps the truest way to enter the music scene. This sounds strange, but I've joined a few metalish bands. Certain band members are interested in prog type stuff, and have strongly considered being in a prog type band with me, but neither of us have material.

Not saying steal band members from another band by sneaking in, grabbing a guitarist or someone and splitting. You also get to know other musicians... friends of the band. I"ve recieved so many offers to come and jam that didn't exsist when I was a bedroom bassist.

This is uninformed advice, just speaking from experience... it's what happened to me, New Orleans is a different scene. Go join a band that wants to be like Eyehategod or Crowbar... there are a lot down there I'm sure.

That's good crappy half-assed advice. I had an interesting conversation the other day.
Guy: How would you like to be a bassist?
Me: But... I am a bassist.
Guy: I mean a bassist in a noise band.

This was pretty unexpected coming from a guy I hadn't seen for months, but I think it illustrates that if you know enough musicians, someone's bound to be as strange as you are. Get in the scene and you'll find some people.

That said, maybe you could do an Internet collaboration with interested parties. It wouldn't be the same, but it could be a good tide over. Live shows could happen via videoconferencing... or maybe not.
