I like Stephani Germanotta. I'm not a fan of Lady Gaga.

A shame she couldn't be famous for that style than what she is doing now.

She should book herself as Stephani as her own opening act.

amazing what some people will do for their 15 seconds . . . though she is making more money than I am in the music biz and an icon of pop culture, probably having the time of her life - but those outfits!

great tune - this is actually the 1st time I can see her face, she is quite pretty too

No one will probably agree with me on this, but the stuff she's doing now is better. More crafted, more polished. A famous writer -- was it Faulkner? -- once said that a young writer has to write about two hundred thousand words of "garbage" out of his system before he finds his voice. This video -- as accomplished as the singing, playing, and overall musicianship is -- shows an artist still not quite at home with herself. She's still writing her way to the good stuff to come (on "The Fame" and "The Fame Monster").

Another thing I think of is this quote from Rossini -- "I wouldn't have been a good Mozart, but I don't think I'm a bad Rossini." That is, Stefani Germanotta would never have been a good Alicia Keys (or Nina Simone, or Carly Simon, or whoever she's trying to be here) but she is an amazing Lady Gaga.

I think, in an entirely theatrical sense, she's the closest thing this generation will get to David Bowie... her music is entirely unremarkable, but at least she's an intriguing performer...

Sad part is, real talent like Stefani doesn't sell like Lady Gaga does. It's a shame, because as Stefani she kind of reminds me of Sara Bareilles...and thats a good thing

Does this statement imply that Bowie's music is/was "unremarkable?

She seemed quite comfortable there. At home with the audience, too. Excellent performance, indeed......Too bad "they" got to her. Of course she might never have slammed it so big without "them". I, too, prefer Stephani over LGG, as well.

That Pre-Lady Gaga clip is further proof that those on the outside should never make assumptions about the actual talent of stars. My gut feeling is that most stars have some real ability. The business is way too competitive to get noticed without bringing something to the table.

I have seen this video and many other pre-Gaga clips of her days at NYU.

I can sum up my only explanation of why she would favor what she does now over what she did then, in two words.

SELL OUT.

/thread...in my opinion she doesn't even deserved to be mentioned on TB.
