Lamb of God's Drummer...a Bass Player??!!

My drummer buddy told me that Chris Adler the powerhouse drummer from Lamb of God, was originally a bass player. I thought that was very cool. So, I found this article and thought it was interesting. Figured my fellow bass players would appreciate it too. I thought it was pretty cool how he takes a bass player's approach to his drum parts.

Quote:
“My ability to balance chops and space comes from the bass playing that I did. You realize how much more you have to offer when you’re not doing anything. Keep it simple, not playing a part when you don’t need it. When putting a song into perspective, how important is it for you to show off right there, or how important is it to just get by? Those dynamics in metal are hard to come by, because everyone wants to blow your head off every time. So give your ear a break, you can pummel it later. I think it’s really important to find those playing dynamics. You have to know that you could be doing more, and understand then why it’s better not to.”
Any Bass players out there play drums too? Or other instruments? If so do you apply what you've learned about bass to the drums (or other instruments)...or vice versa?

I don't play drums, but it's funny you posted this, because one of my good friends who is a huge Lamb of God head and plays bass just told me about Chris' old bass-dom, which I had never known before. Gnarly.

I sort of play drums, congas/bongos actually. It does give me a different perspective. Most bassists should think about and connect with the drummer anyway, but since I actually play, I think I do so even more.
