laptop'external sound card'

ok just got my first laptop(HP dv67000) i'm not the`computer person' in the household that's my wife so to be sure we buy what i can utilise for my'music' as much as possible what's the best bang for the buck?

wife will buy based upon price witch is fine but after using her PC for years it's time for me,,to do much more,so since i'm computer illiterate what should i look for or name one,we pretty much don't live in the same zone(she's not musical at all if you get what i mean? so she would be happy with a boom box radio

(make my day this particular model has a glitch with'sound',i'd love to be able to hook up to my workshop speakers during the day for instance/can i do that? ok>

ok,i AM going to visit a tech and ask some questions,customer gifted me the laptop(manages a pawn shop/i do work for him) that he recomended,,,so this will be for 2 things=autobody biz and my music.,it's nice having it in the shop searching for parts/prices

I use my TonePort (UX1) as my soundcard & got some powered monitors that hook up to it. That way you can plug your bass into it and play through the monitors or use them for games or music or whatever.
