Last Stand of a Legend

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, my 94 year-old Dad went in to the Dr. today and they told him his time is short.(He has prostrate cancer.) He came home and asked me to come over and jam with him...(He plays the lap steel...actually he plays many instruments, but has basically limited himself to the lap steel the past few years.) Anyway, after we jammed for a couple hours he told me what the Dr. said.I felt bad, because it is hard to watch someone who has been your IDOL for years go down. I write this because he is a "legend" here in the Uintah Basin. He built a music hall called the Barn in 1947,and his family band played live music for many years there. At that time they were also playing a live radio show for KJAM radio station. They had several records released including Utah Waltz and Mandola Polka. He had the fortune of having Jim Reeves play one weekend there and even Marty Robbins stopped and played there on his way through to Denver.Dad is Well known and well respected by those who have "grown up" with his music...most have respected his talent and said," He should have been in Nashville, when Nashville needed him." As his bass-player I just decided to sit down and pay a tribute to a worthy musician...he will greatly be missed. To all of you "family musicians"....KEEP PLAYING TOGETHER for those times will never be forgotten.

Sorry to hear this. I know you and the rest of his family will miss him tremendously. Sounds like he has had a long full life! You are a good son to pay him a tribute like this.

Hi K.Ross.

IMO these words of yours form a testament to your father's effectiveness as a good parent and purveyor of positive values:

"...who has been your IDOL for years..."

Given the attitude you've displayed here, it's hard to imagine you not measuring up well to the benchmark he has clearly set.

94 and he STILL has that passion for music, despite such a verdict. WOW. Sounds like someone worth idolizing indeed. I hope I have the same drive and courage if I make it that long.

Man, that's rough. I'm sorry about your dad, just take every chance you can to do what the two of you love to do so much. It really makes me wish that I could spend more time jamming with the few family members who play.

This makes me want to jam with my 2 year old every day. From a dad's point of view, he is not the best drummer yet, but the love of music is there and it makes me smile every time he say's "daddy play guitar" as he drags is drum set from his room to mine. Enjoy the time you have left with him as he will enjoy the time he has left with you.

Sorry about the bad news. My dad is a musician too and I've always wanted to lay down some recordings with him just to have something to look back on one day. Losing a parent has to be one of the worst things. My thoughts are with you.

Sorry to hear about it, Kent. Please try to play with him as often as you can, and encourage him to talk about his life and experiences.

I lost my dad at 77 to pancreatic cancer. He had six months' warning, so at least he and we had time to talk and prepare a bit. All in all, I'd rather have prior warning than not.

wow 94 years.. you're so fortunate to have had such a great influence in your life for so long.

a big +1 on getting some recordings

btw, i like the irony of his "last stand" being played on a lap steel
