The Last Waltz

VH1 Classic is showing The Bands, The Last Waltz. I'm not a real big fan of The Band but the musical guest list is incredible: Ronnie Hawkins, Joni Mitchell, Ron Wood, Neil Young, Muddy Waters and many more. If you love music, I'd recommend watching this. Oh yea, it was directed by Martin Scorsese.

Yeah, great documentary. I've probably only seen it about a dozen times now.

I love the scene where they're sitting around (obviously wasted) talking about women they've met on the road. At one point, Richard Manuel (with a wicked grin on his face) says, "I'm just tryin' to break even..."

And when Robbie Robertson is talking about when they first hooked up with Ronnie Hawkins. Ronnie tells him, "Well son, you won't make much money, but you'll get more (another word for a cat) than Frank Sinatra".

Van Morrison's performance in that is worth the proverbial price of admission alone.

Great movie. It's kind of like watching a band's attempt to save themselves.

definitely one of the strongest performances of the nite.

for some reason, the song that jumped out at me and has stuck with me for decades now, is bobby charles, "down south in new orleans." i don't know who he is, but i dig that song. great drunken sing-a-long stuff.

Love it. +1 to Van Morrisons strong performance.

Also love the way Levon sings throughout the show, esp The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

I have the DVD for the Last Waltz, it's got some pretty good stuff on it, though now that I'm 19 and watching it, I can tell they're on some things....

If you do your research you'll see that those musicians were a big part of the british invasion having been bob dylan's band in the mid-sixty's touring europe on his first electric tour. Most controversial.

DVD is still available, and can be had for a lot less $$ than it cost originally - I picked up a copy in the $5 DVD bin at a store (don't remember which one) about two years ago.

I did hear that The Band started out as Bob Dylan's band, but why the controversy?

The guys in The Band were together before Dylan. They were together before Ronnie Hawkins, who they had in the film for a number, and whom they'd toured with quite a bit before they "discovered" Dylan ; }

I own it, and love it. Ophelia is still one of my all time favorite songs.

Also, the Van Morrison leg kick is priceless.

YES IT IS!! But I wish they had included "Tura,Lura,Lura (That's an Irish Lullaby)" which was on the CD.

British Invasion was the coming of the Kinks, Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark 5, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Peter & Gordon, Troggs, Turtles, etc. This lot way preceded the folks you're discussing.
