I'm lead singer in my band, and we all make fun of each other.

(No I didn't have to say I'm lead singer but yesterday they wanted me to sing full time. SCORE ONE for the bass guys )

i know wat you mean..
my band has two guitarists...and they have this joke about a bass being 'half a guitar'..
usually i just laugh it off or ignore them...but it does get annoying sometimes..especially when i write half the melodic clean stuff on my acoustic guitar at home...and that gives them something to go from when starting a new song..

my bass lines arent root notes..their far from it..and in the last month at practise ive tossed to pick and started playing full time with my fingers..
the problem is that im playing a squier p-bass (i know..it sucks..im getting a fender jazz for christmas) into my yorkville xs400h half stack...and one of my speaker cones isnt in the best shape...so when i play with my fingers i tend to get a real fuzzy .. almost blurry sound...very little note definition...which really bothers me when im playing. we practise twice a week and my fingers are getting alot better than they used to be..
ive just boughten a sansamp di off of Leuch...and it shud be here by next week...hopefully that will clear up my sound as much as possible...but by new years ill have my fender jazz with dimarzio DP123 pickups and the sansamp..so i should have a pretty decent sound from my rigg..

i practise my instruemnt much more than any of them do..and i just wish they'd realize bass is not one bit less in any way than guitar is.

ah well..once we start playing some shows..or record a demo..ill make sure my bass is nice and noticable (not too loud..i hate when bassplayers drown out the other members).

i cud care less if my bass doesnt awe people..
i want the whole band to sound good...not just one instrument.
my guitarists can be assholes...but there still my best friends. my drummer just stays totally nuetral..a quiet guy, but damn can he drum.

I've never experienced the "bass is just an easy guitar" kind of thing. If you JUST lay down a low down groove, and you JUST stay in the pocket and never do anything out of the ordinary -- which works for some people -- you will almost certainly get that stuff a LOT more. My lines are (mostly) busy in a (mostly) good way and I lay it down groovy when I need to. It also helps that you remind the guitarists around you what a bass can actually DO given the right set of hands (Portait of Tracy, any Primus or Victor song will do this fantastically).

That said, I'm in a program with about 15 guitarists, 4 other bassists, 4 drummers, and 2 or three people who sing as their main instrument. Not a one of them disrespects bass -- it helps that one of the teachers (a drummer and pitched percussion man by nature) is a huge fan of good bass players -- today he was talking about Level 42, Jaco, and Victor Wooten. I was talking to this one blues guy who USED to be like that, but the tech at the store heard him talking that trash, grabbed a drum stick, and ripped it up. He was totally schooled and has a newfound respect for bass .

doesnt worry me...im in 2 bands ones a groove based band with 2 guitarists and the other is a vai/satriani type covers soon to be orgionals band with 3 lead guitarists...and im happy playing both, both styles are what i love and in both of them they all say, cmon man, bring it up a notch, just play whatever you want over it.....so in the groove band i just chill slap along improv heaps and in the satch type band i have little tapping battles with each one of them ....i got the perfect bass for each band too.....answers and mystical potatoe head groove thang are like the most fun songs to play

i will once i can play it adequately ..ive got the tapping down...the slap parts are what i need to work on more....i saw vai in concert a few weeks back and i was all hyped up when he started to play blue powder cos i wanted to see how billy went.....i was quite disaapointed, he over did the tap parts then the slap parts sound rather...less impressive when played fingerstyle...but i will post sound clips once we record it

Sweet mate. its the aussie way as you know, gotta be able to give and take @%$^.
P.s. a shame richies getting on, he is really funny sometimes with his dry witty sarcasic comments, very subtle, and few and far between but he smacks them out sometimes.
