Lead me onto good music.

Well! I started playing bass about may of last year, and I went about learning it probably the way most starters did. I went through all my favorite songs, and looked up tabs for songs with cool basslines. after becoming a bit better, I sort of realized what genres had more interesting bass and what was boring as hell. I like playing mostly all types of music but in preticular I'd like to get into funk/jazz type music. I'm all about broadening my musical horizon but theres only one problem, Im seventeen years old so It hard for me to find any old funk/jazz bands that could serve this purpose. I realize there's a wide age range on this forum and I'd appreciate it if some of the veterans could lead me onto some good music. I'd be really appreciative! thanks

look up on Youtube, Earth Wind and Fire, or The Commodores.. for a start.

Most importantly however, checkout this guy..

Try a fellow named Marcus Miller.

He and his band play funk and jazz with a lead/soloing bass role.

can't go wrong with Marcus.

Its not funk but I HIGHLY recommend Metallica for some heavy listening. Red Hot Chilli Pepers are a good into to funk rock.

Do not listen to Les Claypool or Flea- go to a Guitar Center on a Saturday and you will know why.

Listen to Duck Dunn or Jamerson and Larry Graham. Learn how to play in different groves. Substance over flash. Learn to pound out 1/8 notes with a pick for an hour or so.

I highly suggest getting Ed Friedlands book Bass Grooves.

my new craze as of late has been listening to funk from other countries, particularly from (but not limited to) the late 60's-early 70's. good stuff.
