Learning Drums

Sign in to disble this ad
(I did a search but didn't find what I was looking for, so please don't chastise me if this has been asked before).

So, recently, I decided to start learning drums. I can keep a basic beat, can move my limbs mostly independently without much effort and can make it groove. (I'm still a bit shaky, but I figure more familiarity will help me with slight timing and tone issues and help me sound more confident and solid).

I've got a good digital kit to work with (an acoustic kit wouldn't work in my present situation and the digital kit sounds and feels better than most. It also happens to pick up nuance better than most).

I'm just curious as to how many of you decided to pick up drums and what helped you get better/more solid. Any methods/materials/resources that you used that helped you would be great as well as advice.

Any horror stories?

I've been playing an electronic set (Yahmaha TXExplorer) and have been taking lessons with my guiter teacher who is also a good drummer( rock ) . For me It has really opened up my ears (helped my timing) and allows me to play basic rock beats. I have bought some drums methods from RailroadMedia.com. I have however also gotten a lot from a live instructor as well. I hope to lay down my own drum tracks in the future for some music I'm writing and don't want to depend on other people or drum tracks.......good luck to you.......

Thanks.

I just want to be able to play the drums well enough to lay down beats, fill in for bands, or write my own stuff.

I'm thinking of grabbing a few method books on Jazz Drumming and maybe asking a few of my teachers. I have access to some great resources and a ton of fellow drum students, so I would be a fool to pass that up.

I also plan on transcribing some beats.

I switched from drums to bass many moons ago but still tinker around now and then. I would say learn a few basic rudiments. They really help for timing. Then learn some basic beats. A few lessons covering the basics should help alot.

The answer to your question is just like the answer to an old joke:

"How do you get to Carnegie Hall?"

Practice, practice, practice.

Oh and play with a metronome, click or loops.

Happy playing!
Dirk

Great.

I definitely plan on playing to a click. I already practice most of what I do on bass with a click, so transferring it to drums shouldn't be difficult.

Thanks.

I also think so.
