Led Zeppelin's Grammy

Sign in to disble this ad
Finally, 25 years after their demise, Led Zeppelin received a Grammy for lifetime achievement. I was floored; I have always considered the Grammys a reward for the blatantly commercial, and please don't get me wrong, I am not one of these high brow types that is just out to impress his fellow musicians, I am happiest playing three chord songs in front of a bunch of beer drinkers looking to shake their booties, but I have to say it, the Grammys have lost all credibility with me. It took 25 years to recognize one of the best rock bands of all time? A band whose recordings still sell at full price! If that isn't a mark of staying power I don't know what is. Let me stir the pot a bit, what do you guys think?

What is not commercial about Led Zeppelin now days?

Just because the music is great, doesn't mean that Led Zeppelin are not regarded as a commercial band today - just listen to any classic rock station!

Wow, I'm surprised they didn't win a grammy for best car commercial song. (For those outside the US, Cadillac has been using a clip from "Rock & Roll" in their commercials for the last year or so)

I always thought the Grammys should be presented about every 5 years or so...there just isn't Grammy quality (whatever that is) music in every category being put out every year.

I liken it to the MLB All-Star game where each team has to be represented, whether the player deserves to be an All-Star or not.

Please refer to this statement "I am happiest playing three chord songs in front of a bunch of beer drinkers looking to shake their booties." I see nothing inherently wrong with being commercial as long as the music you make comes from your soul. For example, I remember reading an interview with the Bee Gees during the height of their disco fame. A lot folks thought that they had sold out, but the said something to the effect that they were finally performing and writing music that they enjoyed. That being said I am amazed that it took the Grammys 25 years to finally recognize Led Zeppelin.

I was just refencing the fact that today, Led Zeppelin are commercial. Therefore a Grammy is apt!

Grammy quality sounds like an oxymoron.
It's not about 'quality'...& I kinda remember when there was ONE(1) Song-Of-The-Year vs. the Song-Of-The-Year for every genre, sub-genre, sub-sub-genre known to man.

They were always a commercial success, trust me, I am old enough to remember, however they were never something like the Back Street Boys for example, who are your typical Grammy fodder, in other words music specifically designed to sell a product on commercial radio.

I'm pretty sure LZ was commercial way back when.
They had 'hits' that charted, their albums sold well, concerts sold out, TV appearances, etc. There may be a revival of sorts today...I dunno.

Great, just heard on the news behind me that Janis Joplin is now popular again...supposedly, there's going to be a show called "Searching For Pearl", a show dedicated in finding the 'new Janis Joplin'.
(Stlill say Joss Stone is the 'new Janis').

Agree 100&. LZ III was one of the 1st 3 albums I owned(as a 6th Grader).

BSB didn't endure as long as LZ...even in LZ's original run.
"Fodder" tends to burn bright & then flames out hard.
Things played with heart, soul, & edge seems to stand the test of time(non-genre specific).

"Rock & Roll" playing behind me on the TV commercial.

I didnt want to comment about LZ's commercialism back then for fear of offending long time fans (and old people! )

None taken Bro. I don't mind owning up to being an old iconoclastic dinosaur.

Many years ago, I had the pleasure of reading an interview with bass player/songwriter Willie Dixon. The interviewer tried to get him all worked up about Led Zepplin stealing his songs. Willie Dixon finally just laughed and said: "They's paid me my money, 'dey did 'Wolf's tunes too. As long as 'dey paid the money they can put anything on the record they want to".
