Legal issues in recording covers? (UK)

my band are currently working on a 4-5 track ep with one origional and a few covers.this isnt too sell just too handout at gigs and too promoters.does anyone know about any legal issues that may arise?im in the uk so dunno if that makes a difference.

To legally record and sell your version of a song written by someone other than you - in the U.S. you need to obtain a license. The cost is 9.1 cent per copy plus a processing fee.

IN the UK you can contact MCPS - Mechanical Copyright Protection Society for the information.
They will process your request, collect your money and forward it to the author and in exchange you will receive a license to legally do your recording.

Its a small investment that will save you grief in the long run if you ever questioned

If your not SELLING it, then it shouldnt matter. Although, 57P has a great example of insurance for you.
