Bought these speakers.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN:IT&ih=003

The description says "pretty much brand new." You can't tell from the pictures-they are not a matched set. They have different horns (the plastic part.) One of the horns was cracked all the way through. When I removed the screws it became 2 pieces. It wasn't done in shipping. In addition to that, I kept hearing a bumping noise whenever I moved the cabinet. When I removed the horn I discovered the driver was held by 2 flathead machine screws that were too long, allowing the driver to flop. Terrible. The seller is supposed to send replacements this week.

Now, the review. I hooked these up to a power amp, played music though an iPOD and a mic preamp. It sounded terrible. Overpowering harsh highs and not much low at all. I tried all the iPOD EQ settings. Nothing sounded good. I tried using a mixer and EQ with better results, but I had to take most of the high end out.

I wasn't expecting club filling, gut busting bass, but these speakers just don't cut it. Any speaker worth it's salt should sound decent with a flat eq. Not these. The only redeeming quality is they are made out of birch plywood and not super heavy.

Now a couple of questions. They are rated at 350 watts. I was using 200 watts per speaker. Could I have underpowered them? Would a different crossover help?

I removed the jack plates and discovered that one cabinet was loaded with a no brand, no marking whatsoever woofer and an el cheapo Goldwood 2'' driver. These come with Madison Knight woofers and Madison 3'' drivers.

I replaced the jack plates and immediately filed a dispute with Paypal. No response from the seller on the following day, so I escalated to a claim. They didn't even bother to respond. They refunded the amount of the claim. I have had a negative Paypal experience in the past, but in 2 recent transactions it was a big help.

I hate to say it but you kinda got what you paid for. For $250 for 2 cabs youd pay that just for unloaded ones. The worst part is though that he gentleman blatently misrepresentd the auction, so yea def not your fault. If something doesnt get resolved id just go to warehousespeakers.com and get a couple new drivers. Thatll run you like $100 for 2 new drivers and 2 new horns should be too much. For $400 you could have a set of really nice mains, which would still be quite a steal. That does totally suck though, it seems like I hear more bad stories about ebay that good ones these days.

Polishing a turd-I am beginning to see my reflection

I got one of the cabinets ready today. I corrected a botched driver install and installed a Warhouse Speakers 15''. It actually sounds pretty good and is significantly louder and cleaner. The other cabinet's 15'' hole will have to be relieved in order to get the speaker to fully seat. Once I install some decent drivers they should be pretty cool.
