A Lesson for the NOOBS!

Here is a perfect example of what happens to musicians when they do nothing but practice chops, the music itself becomes soulless. So to all you noobs out there, practice your chops, learn your theory, but most importantly get out and play in a band, it is the only place to learn what a bass is for and how to play it.

ENJOY!

EE-Gaddddzzzzzz- that was hideous. Thanks for reminding me that music isn't just fast chops.

Skullgrid was one of the best albums I've heard this year.

There is a similar thread floating around in OT. What gets me is that some folks support this kind of noise!

Its like switching your tv to a static channel and turning the mute off and on at specific intervals to produce some sort of musical? effect...

Their myspace music sounds like sound guys failing to play some bad Buckethead.

Personally, I don't like it too much... some interesting stuff going on but a lot of wanking... but really get over yourselves. LOL. It's music, art, expression.

Don't like it, move on and listen to a band you like.

Yeah, we already had this discussion a few days ago. A lot of people (myself included) actually enjoy that music. It's not my number one favorite genre, but I can certainly appreciate it. It should also be noted that they were playing without a drummer, so an important piece of their puzzle was not there.

Abstract, technical music does not automatically equal bad music.

Here's a better lession for new players:

Listen to all the music you can get your hands and ears on, and learn from all of it. I don't care what kind of music you want to play, there is something to be learned from every other type of music out there.

Warr Guitars rule. Check out some of the work Trey Gunn has done on the instrument.

Listen to their myspace music. It's really, really impressive, and you can hear every note the Warr guitarist is playing.

Indeed. The music on their myspace page is quite impressive, although I am not a big fan of their style.

For all those bad-mouthing these guys, where's your YouTube/Myspace page so others can judge you?

Great advice, real musicians listen more than they play...it is essential.

exactly, I listen to it to say, "nope, I don't want to play that."

True, as a musician you should have an open mind...but how far can a mind be open before the brain falls out?

Just because it's music doesn't mean you're not a musician if you don't like it. I hate Kenny G...but I know many other nonmusicians who love him, does that make them a better musician than me?

The more experience you have in any subject are, the better of a judge in that subject area you can be.

That being said...they do play music, I just think it is musical *self-pleasure*, pointless shredding and notemaking. Nothing really creative or expressive.

I never said that anyone who doesn't like that type of music isn't a musician. I'm simply saying that just because you don't like a certain band, it doesn't mean that said band is bad.

one step forward, two steps back. every time i read a worthwhile thread on here i come across one like this. the catch all should be:
type in something music related into youtube. i guarantee, regarless of who you are, that you will find something you don't like. you'd think people would save that for a forum where they actually encourage the s*** talking so many people on here like to do.
