lets talk drum machines

So I'm unsure of which drum machine I want to get. I've been playing around with a friends DR-202, it sounds great and is easy to work with. But I've been looking into the Roland mc-303, looks even more user friendly. But I've never put my hands on one. Does anyone have a clue about the nature of the MC-303? Does it allow drum pattern building and keyboard sampling like the DR-202?

I have a DR-202. Serves it's purpose. Been using it with protools via midi, I've had it since 2002, no problems at all with it.
The Alesis SR16 reminds me of the Boss DR-550, which I have the 550 also, had it since 1987.

Another recommendation for the Alesis SR16. Better features/value than Boss or Roland. IMHO.

I too recommend the Alesis SR-16 - you should have to pay no more than $60 for a good used one, and they haven't changed in like 20 years - testament to their design.

looks like the SR16 is just a drum machine, does it have they keyboard/synth sounds that the dr-202 and (hopefully) mc-303 have?

Also, the SR 16 battery powered, yes?

Does anyone with circuit bending experience have a preference between the DR 202 and the SR 16?

I dunno. SR16s have been around for so long, with no updates, same old samples. I'm personally sick of the sounds. I won't sell mine for sentimental reasons, since I bought it around 1993 or so, but, man, I would hardly recommend one. I haven't used mine in 8 years.

Alesis SR-16...I paid £289 for one of them in 1990.

It has plenty of pre set patterns and most of the sounds are okay. However, the kick drums are not too good, but I still really like the crash cymbals and some of the snare sounds.

It takes ages to program your own patterns and ages to get it sounding not too "mechanical".....

It does n't do house music drum sounds (909 and 808) and does sound a little dated.

If you want a value for money box with 289 sounds (IIRC) then get one...other wise you are looking at some kind of sample player in hardware or software, which would ultimately sound better but perhaps offer less instant gratification.
