Levon Helm Band at the Beacon

I had the pleasure to see the "Levon Helm Band" last night in Manhattan at the Beacon Theater up on 74th. Steve Earl opened up for him. Earl did a 40 minute set of acoustic guitar and singing.

The Bass player was an Upright Bassist and it sounded real good. Levon's drumming was tight and solid as would be expected. Unfortunately, Levon's voice was compromised by a cold or something. He was coughing a lot. But the show was great. Great music. Had me dancing in my seat.

He did "Ophelia", "The Weight", "I Shall Be Released". thats what I remember. I can't remember the other BAND songs but I think there may have been another one or two performed. His Daughter sounds fantastic and she looked great too.

Everyone in the band was great and looked great. There was a few New Orleans styled songs done and one where the whole band walked around the stage in single file singing and playing along.

Great show!!!

If they did, I don't know. I'd have to hear the song and then someone would have to tell me that it was "Tennessee Jed"

Is that a band song?

No. it's a Grateful Dead song. It's on Levon's latest album, and that cut got a lot of air play here in Austin.

It goes

"Cold iron shackles, ball and chain,
Listen to the whistle of the evenin' train.
You know you bound to wind up dead,
If you don't head back to Tennessee Jed"

and

"Tennessee, Tennessee, there ain't no place I'd rather be,
Baby won't you carry me back to Tennessee."

It's a very cool song, and when he worked the late night TV show circuit promoting the album, it was that song he usually played. They probably did it.
